Probably getting the car painted early August so thinking about a couple of changes prior to that, I have a standard chassis with 17" wheels, currently 265 Falkens on rear, would like more rubber on show so looking at the options/pitfalls, thinking 295 or 305, need some feedback from anyone who has looked at doing/or has done the same, depending on 17" tyre choice, 18" may be an option, just dont know clearance issues without having a mock up wheel, I am happy to cut/flare the arches prior to paint, quite like the look and the car is different anyway with the 545 ci etc etc. So would appreciate any ideas/advice, if I go this route will have 2 x 17" rear wheels to sell to offset the cost. Thanks Dave

Hi guys
Replaced the steering rack gaiters on my '89 Dax last year with a pair from Rimmer Brothers - Dolomite/Triumph 2500.
The nearside gaiter has split and started to perish already. Old stock?
Anyone else had a problem with these, or recommend another manufacturer?

A quick question for anyone who has been in this position before;

The Dax build manual says to discard the original Jag bushes from the lower pivot tube on the rear hub carrier and to use the Dax steel bushes and original Jaguar pivot tube instead to ensure zero play on the mounting into the DeDion tube..

As I'm about to call Wards and find out about getting my suspension parts refurbished at last (my other half has got fed up of me not starting this project so the refurb costs are my birthday present!) I wanted to ask;

Do you tell Wards not to put fresh bushes in and simply to return a remanufactured pivot tube, or did you press all that out before sending the carrier etc off for refurbishing and retain the tube and specify no bushes at all? Or will Wards know what I want if I just say DeDion Dax if they've done a few of these already..

I know it sounds like a daft question but I hate telephone conversations at the best of times so I don't want to call Wards up and sound like a complete plonker.. it's easier to do that part here! :razz:

just doing some final checks over the car before IVA and have noticed the nyloc nuts on the ends of the fulcrums do not have the thread poking through but the ends are sitting flush with the nyloc, i always thought the thread needs to fully come through the nut with at least two threads protruding? All is assembled correctly and tightened up?
Anybody else had this scenario?
As always thanks for any replies

Evening Gents,

I have now sent off my IVA application and am finishing the final few jobs one of which was to replace the flimsy steering column bracket with a beefed up version as was concerned with the amount of flex in it and also have read on here that this was a failure point on somebodys test.
Have now fitted my new bracket and there is now no bracket flex but still a very small amount of movement when turning the wheel with the car stationery, is this acceptable, do you experience this with your cars or am i being paranoid with the test pending do you think?

Cheers

I'm well aware that, with two questions in one day, I may be rapidly approaching "that guy who can't build a car without questioning every little detail" status ;) but you know how the mind wanders when at work.. unless you're a surgeon. I'd hope.

Anyway, a moment ago I was all set on buying the Dax cable kit, until I a) remembered that I wanted a battery isolator switch and b) wondered what dia. the cable was.

So while weighing up the pros & cons of just getting the Dax cable kit and making life easy for myself vs. buying my own cable/ends/crimp tool and isolator, can anyone comment on whether:

1) 40mm2 cable will be man enough for the 428 FE w/ a mini hi-torq starter or if 60mm2 would be necessary (battery in the boot on the Dax so quite a long run of cable)
2) If anyone knows what the reliability of the SVC / CBS FIA isolator is like (they both look identical) - FIA BATTERY MASTER SWITCH - Classic &AMP Vintage Car Parts from SVC - The Best Prices
3) I should just get the Dax kit and stop making headaches for myself (no idea what size cable they supply, though, given the fairly low price of the kit) so I can get past the "Oh god where do I start!?" stage and start doing things.. ok, maybe don't answer that one.

I've read countless threads via the search on cable size and it looks like 40mm2 would be man enough, but some folks don't seem to agree, so..

Ta,

Hi All,

Just had my Dax fail its MOT due to excessive play in the steering rack. I have removed the rack to see if the play is because of the lack of pre-load on the input shaft, as others have found, but alas no it is the rack itself. There is about 1mm of movement in the direction of the red arrows (no plane jokes) on the attached photos. There looks to be two means of adjustment:

1) Co-linear with the input shaft.
2) Perpendicular to the rack.

There is no play perpendicular to the rack which suggests the pre-load on the pinion to the rack is ok (probably adjusted by (2)).
There is no axial play on the input shaft (which I presume is adjusted by (1)).

To me it looks like something has worn out, a bush maybe, and therefore I need a whole new rack :-(.

I have contacted DAX who say they no longer sell my style of rack because of reliability issues and a new one, made by Quaife, is their current offering at the bargain price of £520 + VAT

Does any one have any further details of the internals of the rack & pinion setup?

Hmm.... 14,000 miles, not happy.

Can't attach photos at the moment, will try again in a bit.
