Hi guys I need advise please. Firstly I have the ak supplied flexes from chassie to caliper what is the size / thread fitting I need to buy to conect to these? Second question I would really like to run them in braided I like all the blingey fittings coloured p clips what are the best ones to buy . Where from and also will all this conect up to the rover servo ok ? Third when it comes to the tee piece and clips what is the best way of fixing them to the chassie I have seen some done with nice looking Allen key looking bolts any one know what they are where to get them and how they work ? And finally do the fittings have to be packed away from the chassie slightly to allow for conect ting up. If anyone has got any photos of what they have done that would be great . Thanks for any help

Having spent quite a while looking around, I think I'm finally going to make the plunge and get me a cobra! However, I just wondered whether there are any Club members who are tall and can advise on how well they fit ino their cars?! I'm 6' 5".

Unfortunately I haven't found any locally to go and sit in to see for myself so far.

I've found this one listed on eBay - would also appreciate any advice on the spec or if anyone knows of the car? AC COBRA 427.

Hi Everyone,

I'm Terry from sunny Hampshire. Have admired Cobras for years, and am starting the serious business of planning the eventual ownership of one. I'd like to build it but impatience, and possibly lack of ability might mean I have to just buy a complete one! Also, the life plan for wife and I means we won't have a place to build or keep one for another 18 months or so. Two small places to sell (2nd time around newly weds) in order to buy 1 larger place with garage and workshop, with some cash left over for a cobra ........;)

My big plus is that new wife seems to like cobras more than me, and I wasn't sure that was possible ..... anyway, she is as keen as mustard so that helps!

I will probably ask some very dumb questions on here, so be warned! I have started my "research" in earnest, getting to understand all the options and combinations out there ..... what an array of choice!

First dumb question is around doner vehicles. We have a very nicely preserved BMW 520i, 1995, E34 model M50 engine, with automatic transmission. We had planned to let her gracefully grow into a well preserved classic, but the devil in me wonders how suitable she might be as some sort of doner.

All views welcome!

Thanks

Hi folks,

Hi folks,

A long one this one – so get a coffee – I need (and would very much appreciate) your help…

I’ve decided to buy a car as a ‘weekend toy’. I want it to be a 'keeper' – i.e. something I can look after, cherish and then hand down to my two year old. I’m 41 btw, full set of own teeth, some of my own hair, live near St Albans.

I am sure this falls into ‘mid life crisis’ category… I’ve considered a few things – Ferrari 360 (delicate, not comfortable with the occasional £5-7k+ bill), 996 Mk2 GT3 (too hard for day to day use, too like a £10k 996), 997 (too ‘day to day’ and seen everywhere) and of course, a Cobra.

The Cobra route seems to be the most indulgent and least practical. Probably why it appeals so much. The sounds and performance always make me laugh – and I think, to be honest, the right car will probably turn more heads than my chum who’s just spent £85k on a Gallardo Spyder.

To the car then… Apologies in advance for saying the wrong things, getting my facts wrong, etc. I’m a newbie and need to learn!

I think I’d like a 427 (I prefer the musclier look…) and with a small block V8 tuned (stroked) to 400ish bhp. I am less bothered whether Chevy or Ford (I have no idea which is better – but know the Ford will be more authentic). I like the thought of an old timer look – 15’s with fat tyres (pref Goodyear Eagles (which look great!) but BF Goodrich or Avons good too?). I don’t like the 17’s / 18’s seen on many of the newer cars as much. I think I’d like a black interior and probably a silver body without stripes – or perhaps one in Shelby Princess Blue (as per the racing team) with some yellow front stripes and perhaps a number in a roundel. I think I prefer side exhausts – stainless and nicely finished / de-seamed rather than black or with a cover. And yes, I know I’ll burn my leg – once! Other things I like – single chrome hoop with ‘leg’, nice wheels (are knock-off’s right – dangerous – will they pass an MOT?) and Aston filler cap. I saw a car with twin (working) caps the other day – lovely! My perfect car - in terms of look - would be something like this Sovereign Car Sales : Cobras for Sale

I’d like the car to be a ‘premium’ finish (perhaps not concours but not far from it) – lined engine bay, top quality components, etc and I think, (to check with you all…) I would like a Ram. I like the thought of them now being out of production, the Adrian Reynard / Shelby links and the potential rarity value. However, very happy to listen and learn that e.g. an AK, Dax is better, etc. I realise Crendon, Hawk, Kirkham, Superformance offer a ‘nicer’ car – but think I want to spend around £30k or so – which probably precludes the above. Clearly ‘my’ spec isn’t likely to arrive ‘overnight’ – and I am using the coming period to do my research. I will pop to Newark next month – I am sure I’ll learn lots there… FYI I'm not a wrench monkey and would want somebody to look after the oily bits. I am however a dab hand with the Autoglym!

I’ve got a million (perhaps more) questions – but the first few to be starting with:

•	Is my ‘Ram’ wish the right one? I spoke to a few dealers in passing and I have contrary positions! Some say Ram great, others say it must be a Dax or AK… I prefer the period look and would like to get as close as possible to an ‘old timer’ look. Also – I saw a (sold) Aluminium bodied Ram – are these relatively available??? Also – is there a major difference between the standard Ram and the supertube chassis???

•	Engine – is my small block v8 assumption right? I think big block is a no-no because of handling and fuel consumption. If so, what are the things to look for and which ‘block’ would give me best reliability / performance? I understand the three main options are Chevy, Ford and the Ford racing block? Is 400bhp the right target – or should I wait for something in the 500bhp space? Is this too much?!

•	Body / Colour – I do like silver cars and with a black interior think they are subtly understated. I appreciate they are likely to be harder to sell than may be a blue / white car– but I want to get my car right and then keep it indefinitely so resale not an issue…

•	Exhausts – side exit looks nice (and I presume is louder?) – and they are more practical because the underslung exhausts are rather low to the ground, right? However, underslung would be more ‘period’?

•	Real AC – thoughts on stretching my budget and getting a CRS for around £40k – but with the 220bhp engine and economy spec????? Is ‘AC’ on the V5 worth it? Will it appreciate over time or will it be seen as the runt of the litter?

•	My presumption is that buying a complete car that somebody has spent many, many hours (and 000’s of unrecoverable pounds on) will provide much better value than trying to build a new car. I really liked the V8 BJC car that sold recently – this shows what can be got for sub £30k. It seemed to be, from my reading / viewing – a stunner

My question is really about the ‘best’ way to go about things. I am in no rush – I want the car to be the right one and perhaps a solid chassis / engine etc in the wrong colour might be better than waiting for the perfect car to arrive?

Hopefully you’ve finished your coffee now and can offer me some advice. I look forward to your wise words and maybe meeting some of you in the near future - perhaps at Newark on the Sunday?

Many thanks in advance.

Andy

Hi All,

Joined a couple of months ago but have been lurking in the background sucking up all the good advice on this forum!

I've not long put a deposit down on a GD Jag chassis and have managed to source and strip the Jag components I need. I'm left with what looks like a pile of scrap! Ho hum...having what's left shot blasted at the moment. Can't wait for painting and rebuilding..... I've also had some chats with a guy on here with regards refurbing the power lock diff and easing off the LS effect slightly for the lighter car.

So, I've turned my attention to stripping off the excess "Stuff" from my recently acquired and very mucky Monaro LS2 and T56 combo! Does anyone know an easy way to remove aluminium oxide and staining from rough cast aluminium? Something that can be done in the garage? I've tried some acid based cleaners but they don't touch it! Also destroyed a few wire brushes but can't get into the nooks and crannies. Any advice on the LS2 would be appreciated as it's a new engine to me and even getting service parts seems awkward.

I've had some help from some great lads on here with regards the engine wiring, thanks Happy Jim and Terry!. I've come up with a spreadsheet (based on info supplied by Terry) with all the pinouts for the E40 PCM for the Monaro if anyone is interesred in a copy, I intend to update it as I remove/discard circuits not needed for the Cob.

Well that's me for now, look forward to posting in the future

Cheers

Neil here. Visited Stoneleigh Kit Car Show last weekend, and am now planning to purchase and build a DAX 427.
Total novice, so in the planning stage at the moment. Thought it would be good to join a forum and reap-the-pearls-of-wisdom from those who have gone before me :D
Now off to use the 'search tool' and see if I can find a thread that has a list of essentials to have before you start.
Thanks and looking forward to sharing this journey with you all.
