Hi there.

I have an FIA battery cut off switch which I have mounted on my dashboard, however I am conscious that the big red plastic key would not be IVA compliant. I wondered if anyone else has fitted such a switch on their dash and fathomed a way of how to get it through IVA test. I wondered for example if I either rounded off the edges of the key or maybe stick a rubber type edging around the key?? Would that suffice?? The switch is mounted pretty centrally on the dash so is outside the steering wheel zone.

Many thanks in anticipation of your help.

Well, I finally made a visit to Mr Kerr tonight after work, as has been well documented previously, what an incredible place, an incredible one man industry and an incredible product.

The two cars in there looked mighty fine and we shared a few hours of Cobra, BMW and general chat.

Whilst there John demonstrated his free castor camber gauge on his website and also his tube beading tool, incredible!

A very robust tool, very easy to use and a perfect finish, I was well impressed!

A true gent!

After 10 years of ownership V8BJC is no longer a Cobra :-(. Got the letter from DVLA today confirming that the car has been returned to its original number.

The new owner collected the car today also leaving me an empty garage. Very strange feeling watching somebody else drive it of my drive.

I wish the new owner all the the best with the car that I have enjoyed so much since 2003. The car came to our wedding and is almost like one of the family.

I have met a lot of good people through this club and many have become good friends so I am sure that I will see many of you around at various events. Those that travel with me just need to promise to wait for me as I now have 200 less horses to play with ;)

Student up for sale on Ebay, converted to single phase. £200 at the moment.

This is quite a nice one, gap bed so you can do big diameter objects, optional induction hardened ways so they should be in good nick. Metric and imperial thread cutting gearbox. Looks a mess, they usually do, but should clean up nicely... and it would appear to have a collet chuck (can see collets but not chuck) which if there can be sold for about £200.

Nothing to do with me but looks an ideal home garage spec if you are after a chunky lathe. :-)

Mentions a little gearbox noise but they all seem to do that in certain gears. Mine does, had it apart and the gears themselves are fine.
As people have previously pointed things out that I have missed I would like your comments on it, It looks nice, sierra donor, galvanised chassis, straight through underslungs (would have prefered sides but hey!
Not sure what Mk it is, thinking its a mk2 or 3 from the sierra donor though, cable clutch (which i will change though i dont think it's failed yet) is there anyone around Belaugh, Norfolk who would meet me and go have a look over it for a few beer vouchers possibly Fridar or the weekend?

Kind regards

Way back in 1995 I had an accident in my Dax and the insurers paid out for a new body, because it was cheaper than repairing the front right arch and other damage.

I "bodged" up the old body and ran it for a year before swapping the shells. Once swapped, I sold the body in late 1996 to a bloke called Andy in Western-Super-Mare who was building a budget Cobra. I know that he sold it on as I got a phone call a few years ago from a different bloke who had bought the shell and wanted some background info. There the trail runs cold and I have no idea if the shell ever made it back onto the road.

The shell is very easy to identify. It's a black Dax with a small bonnet scoop, the most obvious feature is the recessed fuel filler fitting in the rear deck. Other mods include lowered rear wheel arch floors, reinforced arches and nose, as well as the "bodged" right fromt wheel arch.

I keep looking out for the shell at shows, but to date have never spotted it. If you have it or know someone with it, drop me a line, I would be interested in knowing it's present condition.

I'd put some pictures up but for some reason the forum won't let me??

Cheers.
Mark.

I’ve been reading with interest some of your problems encountered when having your Cobra certified for the road. Some of the things discussed seem the powers-that-be are quite fussy. It’s not quite the same here and there seems to be no consistency across the country. For Nova Scotia, there’s an engineer who DOT/Registry of Motor Vehicles recognizes as someone with the expertise to check these cars out. In fact any modified car is supposed to be checked by him as well.

I did fairly well with the inspection, although he had three things I had to change.

The first was the filler pipe that goes between the fuel cap and the tank. Apparently connecting them with a heavy piece of urethane tubing (¼” thick walls) was insufficient (in the case of an accident). He wanted them to insert into each other as well.

As you can see in the sketch below, I eliminated the top joint by welding and also welded a smaller diameter tube to the lower end that would insert into the tank. A urethane tube is still used over that joint.

The next item to change was the shift knob as it had a 4-speed pattern on it and I was using a 5-speed. I had to either find a correct shift knob or (Heaven Forbid!) install a placard with the pattern on it somewhere handy to the shifter. I finally found the correct knob and installed at as shown below.

The last issue was marking of the dash controls which included switches, rheostats and a windshield washer hand pump. You can see the layout below.

I could have just used thin sheet metal washers with tabs bearing the control functions, but didn’t like that idea. I really didn’t want to resort to using DynoTape. But as I sort of liked the old Ford bezels, I used my trusty lathe and made aluminum bezels for all the controls. But there was some trouble doing this.

First, the diameter and pitch of the threads for the various controls were not of a standard I’ve seen in any typical tap and die set. However I found a Tool company that could get them for me so that problem was solved. By the way, most switches and rheostats were 9/16“-28 and the Horn Switch was 15/32“-32, both of which I needed taps only. The Washer Pump was 5/8”-27 and I needed both a tap and die for it.

Secondly, my intention was to have the function information engraved on the aluminum bezels and then fill the engraved lettering with black paint. No such luck. I tried a few engraving shops and they all told me they couldn’t do compound curves. I’m not convinced as they do metal beer steins on a regular basis, but perhaps the curve on my bezels was too severe.

So I resorted to vinyl lettering, at least as a temporary measure until I could find out more about engraving. Here they are (yes, still not installed, but will be soon as the engineer didn‘t want to come back if I promised to take care of all three issues. I am a bit delinquent with this last change so there‘s guilt involved).
