Unable to access links

Guys,

Following some problems with the phone wiring into the house we have had the computer reloaded with the programs it had previously. ( Faulty wiring causing error messages and bogus virus warnings hence the cleansing of the computer HD).

Anyway everything works fine now apart from the fact that I am unable to click on a link on a site and be routed to the new page. A new screen opens but then nothing happens. This also happens when I'm trying to access on line banking sites etc.

I'm running Windows XP ( ok dont laugh it was free) on BT Yahoo Broadband.

I'm betting its a simple tick box that needs ticking but I'm beggared if I know what I'm doing so I thought I'd ask the computer bods on here their advice.

Help greatly appreciated as I need to get onto the banking site to see how much Xmas cost me !!

Many thanks,

Tony

What firewall are you running? If you are running Norton or Mcafee etc, ensure you have turned off your Microsoft Firewall (oxymoron).

When trying to troubleshoot a problem, it is a good idea to turn off conflicting services, two firewalls can potentially conflict. :thumb:

Re: Unable to access links

Hi TonyD

Ok one of the main pronlems when clicking on links and just getting a blank page happens on pages running JS or some Active X.

You mensiond bank sites, well there you go they run scripts all the time to log you securly and log your PC for security reasons etc.

Ok what you need to do is
1) Find a link that makes your PC do this and send it to me so I can emulate your problem on my PC

2) But this should work... open up Internet Explorer on a page that laods like Google.com

3) after the page has loaded click Tools, Internet Options on the main menu bar at the top most of Internet Explorer, Then click the Security Tab, on this window you will be shown four options INTERNET, INTRANET LOCAL, TRUSTED, RESTRICTED sites.

Click the INTERNET should be a piccy of a globe.

As a default install it should be set to Medium security level if it is not click the Default security levels button, This will set it to medium.

Then click on Custom Level button ok in here you can set up the way Internet Explorer handels pages with script and Active X on them.

About the top 7 or 8 options will be about enableing and runing active x scipts etc what you need to do it set all these to allow Active X to run asigned and unasigned and none safe etc set them all to what you think it should be to let them work.

i.e. Enable unasigned active X , enable let unsafe scripts run, enable run stuff without prompting.

Ok only do this for the top 7 ish options about the active x then go see if your web pages work. if they do go back if you like and disable a few of the unsafe ones and so on till you get a balance.

If this does not work send me a link that gives you hassle for me to see about it.

Kind Regards

Re: Unable to access links

Hi Hagster,

Tried as you suggested but still didnt connect to any pages, instead I got an "Internet Exporer Script Error" message box.

It appears that the page tries to load but just doesnt make the connection. If I then look at the Windows task mananger every site or page I have tried to load is listed and its status is denoted as "Running". It seems that not only doesnt the computer allow the page to load but it then keeps the phantom page running alongside the current page which of course tends to slow the whole machine down.

This condition is not just limited to bank sites and other security conscious sites but every time I want to link from one page to another within sites or from links posted onto other sites.

For example, although I can move from page to page within this Cobra club website, if I click on a posted link to another website the computer just opens a blank screen and sits there. So I close down the blank screen, but it is stuilll sitting there in the task manager classed as " Running".

Any ideas?

If I had any hair left I'd be tearing it out by now !!

Cheers,

Tony
