Dax Builders

Hello,

I have a Dax Tojeiro built in 1991. It's a mark IV. When the car is parked on the flat with the wheels pointing dead straight, the front wheels look as if they are splayed out from the bottom. How do I adjust the camber on the wheels. Is there a set way of doing it please and how do I know what camber to set the wheels at.

Thanks Chris

Re: Dax Builders

Hi Chris.
I think the MKIV chassis was introduced in 1994.
To adjust the camber you need to:-
Remove front wheel.
remove the two bolts that hold the top wishbone to the chassis and alter the no of shim washers that space the wishbone pivot bar from the chassis.
The camber depends on what size wheels and tyres you have and I think, the type of steering rack that you have.
The first thing to do is to check that you have the correct ride height otherwise the camber will never be right.
Ride height behind front wheel, floor to chassis 5.5"
Ride height in front of rear wheel floor to chassis 6.5"
Front toe.........Zero
Rear toe..........15 - 30 mins toe in.
F Camber on 15" wheels 1.5 deg. neg. (Leaning in at the top)
R Camber on 15" wheels 1 deg. neg.
F Camber on 17" wheels 1 deg. neg.
R Camber on 17" wheels 0.5 deg. neg.
To check the age of your chassis:-
the chassis no. on models from 1994 (I only started working on then from then onwards) goes somethuing like:- SA9DAXM4R*A038XXX
of this number the last three digits (XXX) are the chassis no. for that year. Eg. 156.
the 8th digit (The No.4 in the above) is the Mark no. (MKIII or MKIV etc.)
The 10th digit is to indicate when the chassis was made. In recent years this has been a number EG. a chassis made in 2002 would have the no. 2 here. But when production cars were registered by a letter (Prefix style (A111 AAA)) then a letter was placed here.
So if you had a MKIV chassis made last year the chassis no would be:-
SA9DAXM4R4A038*** and if you had a chassis made in September1995 your chassis no would be:-
SA9DAXM4RNA038***.
At least that's how I read them.
Now if you had a De Dion.......................?????

For the De Dion people out there (Before they ask)
SA9DAXTD14A038***
SA9DAX (as usual) TD1 (Tojeiro De Dion MK I) 4 (2004) 038 (usual) *** (Unique number)

If you have an earlier chassis than a MKIV then you will need to speak to either Peter or Gary at the dax factory (01279 442661)

Have fun. :thumb:

Re: Dax Builders

Thanks very much Dave for all this information. I am running on 17" wheels. How do I measure the degrees of the camber. Do I use a protractor and a spirit level. Is this something I can do myself. Where do you get the spacers from and how thick are they. Also my chassis number is SA9 DAX M3RKAO38.... So I think this makes it a mark 3. Is it a De Dion, if so what does that mean , is it a good or bad thing.

Thanks Chris

Re: Dax Builders

Hi Chris.
I have a digital gauge for camber setting but some people make an overgrown protractor about 18" square to get a clearer view and a plumb line.
You7 will ahve to call the Dax factory regarding the settingsd though for the Mk 3 chassis.

Grandadboats.
You've got me on that one, Probably a miss print / stamp at the factory and probably should be a "V" .
