virus W32/Elkern.C

Can someone tell me the best and hopefully free way of removing W32/Elkern.C virus
from my system.
I have Antivar installed and every time I leave the pc when I return there is a message saying that a volume restore file as this signature in it.
I delete the file but the message reappears next time the pc is left.

I am running XP.

Also, if you haven't already done it, upgrade XP for free (assuming a bona fide copy) to Service Pack 2 SP2 and keep on top of the Critical Updates.

Re: virus W32/Elkern.C

Thanks to all
I have SP2 installed already with automatic updates:thumb:

Ran both Panda and Stinger, neither of which found it, but the messages seem to have stopped.
Fingers crossed

Re: virus W32/Elkern.C

Rich,

you could try a couple of the free online services from either symantec or Trend. Trend will do a free virus scan of your PC - after you download their virus scan engine. Symantec provide a virus removal tool for W32.Elkern.4926, which is a variant of the one you've got.

Symantec website = http://securityresponse.symantec.com...kern.4926.html

trend = http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/cons...secall_pre.php

Good look

Ken

Re: virus W32/Elkern.C

Whatever you do to get rid, you need a better anti virus engine.

If you go on amazon and buy (Network associates or NAI) McAfee virus scan 2005 it comes bundled with firewall and anti spam for only £10, auto updates every day, great on xp (well it does on mine and the macinhes at work.

Re: virus W32/Elkern.C

Thanks for the replies, I did rid of it 3 weeks ago.
My anti virus software (Antivar) did it's job, but after reading the info on the symantec site that Ken mentioned, it became apparent that if the software becomes exposed to the virus it may well give later false readings.

After reinstalling Antivar all has been well.

Cheers All
Rich
