| Tom Tom 5 Upgrade For those using TomTom3 Placed the order for upgrade on the 9th with a 5 week warning for delivery.... It's turned up today (21st) Cost £46 incl shipping. I took the chance to do a long overdue ROM upgrade on the IPAQ, very smooth upgrade and only took 10 Mins (wipes all data but they do warn you often enough). Tom Tom app install went smoothly, about 5 mins total! There are 6 CD's of maps (detail of all EU plus the Major routes of Eu). Just downloading the 1st Map at the moment.....looks like a long wait More later Jim |

| Re: Tom Tom 5 Upgrade Will follow with interest - the older version (3??) seems to run slowly on my Ipaq 3970. Jon |

| Re: Tom Tom 5 Upgrade I'm running TomTom3 currently on Windows Pocket PC 2003 (HP IPAQ 4150) - which was a complete pain to install and get running how I wanted it...but worked beautifully once it did. I've got POIs running for speed cams/red light cams/specs etc with Checkpoint for alerting against those POIs. Maps....you get updated versions of the UK and Major Roads of Europe, but you now get all the detail maps of the EU countries as well - so worth it on that score as far as I'm concerned. The software (should....baited breath) now include the full postcode search (previously I had to use add in software to do it) and do POI alerting (so shouldn't need Checkpoint any more). 212Mb download of UK & Major Roads of Eu.....Started 20:15, still waiting...sheesh! | Re: Tom Tom 5 Upgrade Maybe its my setup but I found Ver3 to take along time to calculate a route (and re-routing). Did you have all the data on a SD card and the programme on the machine? Thanks jon |

| Re: Tom Tom 5 Upgrade Jon, Yep, map on the SD card and programme on the PDA. There are differing qualities of SD card apparantly (medium, slow and crawl) so that can make a difference to calc time, although it's more likely to be processor related. Jim |

| Re: Tom Tom 5 Upgrade Latest.... 1 Hour to download the map (200Mb), 3 mins to download the Post Code file (9Mb).....no comment! Software looks OK, the registration process happens after you have installed the Map (activation code etc). All tickety boo then  my Ar$e. Can't get TomTom to speak with my BT GPS (Fortuna Clip On), Blue tooth manager pairs the device nicely, TomTom won't recognise it, BLX off to find a nice PDA forum. Jim |

| Re: Tom Tom 5 Upgrade Solution found in amongst the plethora of grumbling TomTom forums :thumb: Have now switched my Blue Tooth GPS receiver from ST (Standard) to XT (Sirf Xtrac) Mode and told TomTom its a wired "Other" device hanging off Blue Tooth Comm port 6 (had to start at 4800, now running 38400 baud). Now to find a bluetooth stack hack so I don't have to manually connect each time I want to use it. One thing that is immediatly obvious is that each country has a Country Plus option for the map, this stitches together the detailed country map with the major roads of Eu map, hence you can navigate from home to Italy without switching maps until you are actually in Italy (when you would want the more detailed map). So far so good, now for a couple of days stress testing Jim |

| Re: Tom Tom 5 Upgrade Jim, My upgrade was a bit less painfull than yours, but...... the maps are still woeful, it still hasn't got the A19 upgrade just south of the A64 and that has been there years, same I went to see a mate whose house was built 3 years ago, again TT5 didn't know the street. they haven't released an SDK, so you can't get checkpoint to work, so I have lost my speed camera database I haven't worked out how to do full postcode search, i only seem to be able to do what you could in TT3 and although I haven't looked too far yet, I need to turn the tips off, they are driving me nuts Cheers Alastair |

| Re: Tom Tom 5 Upgrade Quote:
Full postcode doesn't work......until you create a "tomtom" directory (blank, nothing in it) under the root of the SD card...sofistikated programing  Then it works a dream. I haven't been out to play with the mapping yet (other than home to work) as I've nadjered my back and can't get in the Cob at the moment. Rgds Jim |
