Windows 98 USB connection

Help - I've run out of ideas, can anyone help.

First my apologies - I am still running Windows 98SE, but am rapidly deciding its time to buy a new PC and update !

I eventually found some drivers on the net to connect my Sony PSP via USB to the PC. Unfortunately when I got around to doing it yesterday I made the cardinal sin of making the USB connection to the PSP before downloading the drivers.

Now that I have downloaded the drivers when I switch on the PSP via USB and connect to the PC it is not detecting / recognising the PSP !

I've been into device manager to delete any ghost drivers, invalid drivers etc, I've even deleted the USB controllers and reloaded, still doesn't find the PSP. It still finds and connects to my digital camera so I know the connection is ok.

I have two USB controllers in device manager at present - 1) USB root hub (with the following drivers, usbhub.sys and VMM32.VXD). 2) Via tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller (with following drivers, uhcd.sys, vmm32.vxd, usbui.dll, usbhub.sys, usbd.sys).

Anyone got any ideas what I can try next ??

yours, very frustrated
Dave

Re: Windows 98 USB connection

I had the same dilemma as yourself.

A Windows 98 machine, and a need to connect modern USB devices,

Only way out - new PC, and XP. And thank goodness I did, XP is the most stable windows platform I have ever had (and I go back to Win 3.1). It does seem to like plenty of RAM tho' - 1Gig suits it very well indeed.

Re: Windows 98 USB connection

may be very basic but have you tried just installing the drivers and then connecting the device - sometimes it recognises it. I'm with wilf though- 98 and USB are not compatible!!

Re: Windows 98 USB connection

You may find that the PSP is USB2, not USB1 in which case win98 won't have a hope.

Win98SE is USB compatible, but only by the skin of it's teeth. I'd upgrade and hope for the best. Sound like you've been putting off the enevitable for years.!

Bollocks to Dell , have a look at the deals from Mesh, I'm on my 3rd computer from them, can't say what there service is like, cos I've never needed it in 7 yrs of dealing with them, totally hardware trouble free. :thumb: :thumb:

Look at the deals of the week or specials, but don't forget whatever you buy, it will be out of date before you have it delivered whoever you choose to purchase from.

Re: Windows 98 USB connection

Definitely time to upgrade, yep you're right - been thinking about it for ages, but money is not endless and it has gone on the car to date - priorities !

There looks like some good deals on the mesh site, whats the easiest way of checking AMD processor speeds to pentium chips - for instance the AMD 3000+, what would this compare to in the intel range ?

On a cobra related subject - is there a local club in the Bristol area, or is it the one down in the South West ?

cheers Guys

Dave

Dave

I've allways stuck with AMD as they have been trouble free, If you do a search on www.google.co.uk for amd versus pentium, there is loads of comparisons.

Regarding the meets, Paul Birch is the area rep for Glos/W Wilts/N Somerset give him a ring 01179 9104937.

You are more than welcome to visit our meets in the South West. :thumb: :thumb:

Re: Windows 98 USB connection

I have specced and installed several Dell pc's over the past few months and they all seem fine. They are good in the sense that you can get individual drivers off their website aswel.
I cannot speak for mesh, except one that the motherboard died on it (within the guarantee period), and they replaced it ok.
If you are on a budget, then Acer make good pc's if you want to buy one from staples or such other shop. Dell seem to provide best VFM tho.
AMD opteron and Pent IV are on a par. AMD semperon are equivelant to Intel Celeron (so steer clear of both).
JMHO.
Cheers
