Gents,

I have a new pc with Norton Internet security installed with firewall on etc.

When using it today (Hotmail) I clicked on a friends email (it came from her address anyway) to read it, I then found my homepage had gone from google to a french hardcore porn site, my favourites has been filled with all sorts of sites, all this with the filters security on etc.

This poses a few problems and Im hoping someone can shed a light.

Everybody has now got from my friends email the same situation as me.
The email was not sent by her.
My computer favourites is full of porn (normally wouldnt be aproblem but im trying to build a kitcar!!)
The homepage will not default back to anything other than this french site.
My dial up number is my standard number so not premium!! Phew!!

Question is how do I get rid?? Or learn french??

Does this mean the norton filters that are set to high are not the best. If this security system is not up for the job whats a good antivirus do dah to install

I hate pcs and detest having to fart around with them as its unnescessary.

This sort of problem can normally be rectified by backdating your pc to a date before you recieved the lergy.
go to:-
START
PROGRAMS
ACCESSORIES
SYSTEM TOOLS
SYSTEM RESTORE
then choose a date

Then purchase McAfee Security Suite 2006 and get rid off Norton, waste of good space IMHO.

I've tried that free av, but I'm afraid it doesn't keep on top of new virus's quick enough for me, unless you buy there license.

I would prefer to stick with paying for a tried and tested product like McAfee and get the regular DAT updates.

Thanks gents, knew I could rely upon you guys. Spoke to a man from D**l where I bought it from, I hung up in the end couldnt understand a bloomin word he was saying, probably a nice chap but his accent was so strong.

Ive downloaded pc doctor a spyware seek and destroy program. It has found 2 files Norton hasnt even though I updated this morning and it was free.

The page has stopped going up and down by its own accord and the mouse stays put.

At least fom this experience I have learnt a few french words for genitalia and bedroom athletics. Will try my luck with the french ladies with my new found skills next trip abroad!!!

First of all, get rid of Microsoft Internet Explorer and Outlook Express. Only use them to download Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird (free as in beer). Install the Firefox extension kalled "No Script" to make it even more secure and safe.

A good antivirus application is good to have but it will not stop all malware (like adware etc.). I prefer NOD32 antivirus, it's actually so good (compared to bloated products like Norton Antivirus) that is is well worth paying for.

Use free applications like SpywareBlaster to stop crap getting into your computer in the first place (the crap that slipps by your antivirus application because it can't be classified as virus and some US company do make money out of it and antivirus companies don't want to get sued for stopping their crapp).

Use free application like Ad-Aware to help you clean out anything that already got in to your PC (some might be hard or even impossible to get rid of without reformatting you drives and reinstalling everything, sorry).

Buy a real firewall (dedicated hardware) or use some old PC-hardware to build it yourself, I can recommend m0n0wall, it's free and easy to setup, configure and maintain.

I would also recommend Firefox extensions Adblock and Adblock Filterset.G Updater since it stops loads of crap blowing up in your face (it should be stopped by the other products but it makes surfing less annoying and your PC will consume less bandwith while surfing since it stopps loads of crap to be downloaded to your PC in the first place).

I agree, Firefox is excellent, I never use any other browser, except when I want to view links from ebay, as Firefox won't show me the pictures, I then use Netscape, probably got Firefox set up wrong, but its no hassle to change browsers to view the pics. :thumb:

Not sure whether it is true - but I was told the other day by guys who had to rebuild my computer because of spyware infestation that norton and mcafee are actually very good as programs. The problem however stems from their popularity. Most new computers have either of these anti virus products. Therefore if you want to be a successful hacker the best programs to try to infiltrate are these because it gives you rapid access to a millions of computers - thus they are a perfect target.

Free stuff is no more difficult to infiltrate with concerted effort - just not worth trying it. Don't know if it is true but sounds logical.
