Winfixer

Can anyone give a recommendation on which of the many touted "Winfixer removal tools" will actually work without giving me more problems ??

I have Windows ME and have this very annoying pop-up that keeps slowing everything down and even freezes the screen. I am led to believe this is causing problems for even knowledgable computer people due to it's ability to get into so many areas of the computer system and being difficult to winkle out.

Any advice welcome.

Paul

Paul,

I would advise getting the hell off ME in the long term - it's the worst Operating System that Microsoft have ever developed and that's saying something.

In the short term take a look at these -

Adaware - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
Spybot - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

I personally use Spybot and have done for a few years.

Kev

You have just voiced something I have been considering. To be fair, the Windows ME has worked for over 5 years with no problems but to upgrade to XP it seems that it is best to do a complete clean install from a reformatted hard drive. This then raised the question as to whether it is better to upgrade or get a new computer ??

I am not very "up" on the latest computing techniques and the thought of doing lots of deleting etc scares the hell out of me ! Starting from new has a number of attractions, not least of which, is getting rid of Winfixer.

Re: Winfixer

If you are thinking of buying a new PC I suggest waiting a while as Google have today announced they are shortly bringing out a PC for £150 and that will really bring other prices crashing down

Its a thin client system, so there will be a very small hard drive for booting up and a cut down OS, and you would have to use online applications, so a bit limited really.

Google will probably wrap their desktop service up with it and offer online storage for you, for advertising etc etc.

Re: Winfixer

I think Kayjayd has it right, sounds like you have spyware and maybe also consoles (little grey boxes popping up and grinding yor machine to a halt), spybot that he gives the link for will fix it no problem.
Might be worth getting mcAffee 2006 of Amazon for £4.95 plus post if your anti virus is out of date.
I had ME on my last laptop, it is a little slow, but bomb proof (OK the piping hot fresh cup of coffee I spilt on it :whatever: killed the Tosh laptop, but apart from that it was bomb proof!!!!)

Hope you fix it ok

Re: Winfixer

Go to www.microsoft.com, click on the download link and download Microsoft AntiSpyware - it's one of the best Windows products I've found - completely free too...
