When you had the 2nd HD connected did you have them set to master + slave. If they are both set as master(on back of HD) they may very well conflict.
Did you check Device Manager in control panel:
Contol panel/performance and maintenance/system/hardware/device manager, for any conflicts.

Yes - the jumpers were set properly.
I never specifically checked for any conflicts.
Touch wood, it seems to be fine now (says he with fingers tightly crossed )
