I was just working that out, you spoil sport.

I keep all my data on a Microsoft Home server PC in the garage which runs a Mirrored RAID set. It is then backed up to a network disk in the house. Both have their own UPS.

So how geeky is that?

To be fair though it does mainatin all my wifes business data too.

Andi.

I think £12 a month is excessive for a backup service. £144 a year.

I've got two external hard drives which back up the machine once a month. Only ever one drive here in the house - the other comes into the office and gets put in the desk drawer. The one that's in the desk comes home. End of the month the process repeats itself.

Cheap, inexpensive backup (and quick).

I am however running out of space so it's time for a couple of larger hard drives seen a couple of nice 1TB jobs.. mmmm

It's worth considering getting a small fireproof data safe. I use one to keep my backup disk in, but also any other irreplacable and/or important items or documents, things like photo negatives of my daugther growing up etc.
They're not expensive and well worth the small investment if the worst happened.

For home I use a portable seperate drive and just drag and drop/overwrite my documents and my favourites once a month, simple and it cost me less than £60 and all in my control, plus it means I can take them with me if needed. I was using Nero back it up differential back up but a drag and drop is so much quicker.
Not fire proof but good enough for me.

It is business data so the nice VAT and TAX man also help me pay the £12 per month.

But when you consider how much the data is worth ........ £12 per month is bu99er all

for our business we auto back up our server every night to a tape drive (cheap as chips and very effective) and the previous nights tape is taken off site, so worse case we are 1 day out of date.
