Web-Cams

I have a pretty cheap Trust Web-Cam and my daughter in Corfu has the same, the picture quality when viewing through Skype isn't all that great.

What determines the quality, could it be the speed of her Broadband connection (1meg) or the cheap web-cams.

probably the web cam quality; to id the source of the problem, if you have a digital camera with video; pop your usb lead from your webcam on the digi cam enable video and try it with that, if the pic at your daughters end is a lot better (but slower screen changes) you know its the cheapo webcam, if not, you know its the connection; my money is on the cheapowebcam.
If this makes sense??

Image resolution, my garage cam is running at 1280*960.

Some cheap web cams can be as low as 320*240 pixels.

The Internet bandwidth will limit the number of frames per second which of course will depend on the size of the image. So 320*240 will look smoother as a video that 1280*960.

HTH.

It will tend to be more down to the UPLOAD speed.

On a UK 8 Mb broadband (i.e. you can download a theoretical maximum of 8192kb per second or 8388608 bytes per second.)

So a 50MB file (51200 Kilo Bytes) , would take 6 seconds to download.

However, typically you can only UPLOAD 448 kilobits per second (= 56 Kilobytes per second)

The same 50MB (51200 Kilo Bytes) file would take you 914 seconds to UPLOAD (approx 25 minutes)

Thats the problem, you can download at a relatively fast speed but you can only download as fast as the other person can UPLOAD.

I have a faster than normal UPLOAD speed on my broadband of 832 kilo bits per second (around twice the upload speed of normal broadband)

Be great when both upload and download speeds are high

Why do you need to see her?
Did you forget what she looked like?
Just stick a photo of her on your monitor.
