Online Banking scams and paypal etc

I am getting quite a few of these now per day, so I thought I would post up here just for information.

You get an authentic looking email from an online banking provider, like barclays etc, now if you bank with barclays, you might not think anything of it and do what the ask!!!

http://www.cobraclub.com/crcforum/user_files/4491.jpg

Clicking on the link takes you to a very authentic looking site, and they even pull the relevant inages from the actual Barclays Online Banking site.

However, if you look at the code behind the page, you are actually on a redirected page.

A quick lookup on samspade gives me the following info.

www.personal.barclays.co.uk.userset.net = [ 211.46.87.1 ] -----------------------------------------------
Queried Domain Information as follows

Not a lot to do with Barclays at all. They ask for your account number, security code etc etc. People fall for these all the time, please don't let it be one of us!!!! :tu :tu :tu

These secondary addresses are quite well hidden, so just be on the lookout.

thanks for that robert.

one more thing to note about these scams according to watch dog they originate in the former soviet block so pay particular attention to the grammer, the one in roberts post does not read quite right

if in doubt just call your bank and they will be happy to confirm if it is genuine

I was wondering that too! {-}
A lot of these scams(like the Ebay ones) have lots of real links
to official pages, but NONE of the real banks,Paypal etc will ask for passwords or account details.
With most banks,Paypal,bidpay etc. if the address doesn`t start https: then it ain`t jinyouwhine.

RE: Online Banking scams and paypal etc

Guys,

Before you use any electronic payment do the following, it will save your bank balance.

1) Check that it is a SSL connection (look at the beginning of the URL https://....)

2) In MS IE look at the bottom tool bar and hover over the padlock to check it is SSL Secured (128-bit). If it is not then it will probably not be a bank or Internet payment site.

3) For final security in MS IE, go File -> Properties -> Certificates and check the Issued to and check that the Issued by is from a valid Certificate Authority (e.g. Verisign, Thwate, etc.).

Anyway, this might help.

John.

Ps, Well done for be so pro-active, I wish the banks were so helpful.
