Desktop locked

We are now the proud users of up to date hardware at work at long last, but the IT bods have locked the desktop onto a very boring blue with the IT Dept's telephone number on it. It's been locked on the control panel to prevent people like me putting their own desktop on & run the risk of viruses etc.

How do I change it (just to spite them really)

Re: Desktop locked

Richard,
Find the file that it is using for the Windows background ( likely to be a JPG or a BMP file), and rename the file to something different, then rename the image that you want to use to the original filename ...easy.
You will more than likely need to reboot the system for the change to take effect.
Cheers
Paul

Re: Desktop locked

Paul

Thanks for that -all sounds very logical but having done it, the IT bods logo has gone leaving the background colour which is still locked & I cannot seem to find the file pertaining to the colour. I s'pose if I do then I can rename/delete it & i'll be in buisness.

BTW just noticed you live in Nuneaton -an old haunt of mine many years ago. Are you interested in joining up our merry band in the East Midlands CRC Branch? We meet up every month in Kirby Muxloe which is not a million miles from you

Re: Desktop locked

If you can get to it run regedit and search in there for the definition wallpaper.

Start > Run then type regedit in the box and hit return.

In regedit, hit CTRL and F and type wallpaper in as the search.

Should go to HKEY_Current_User/Control Panel/Desktop

In there there should be a definition for the wallpaper, probably c:WINNTsomeinage name.

Hope this helps.

Rob

Re: Desktop locked

This is all well and good but depends what OS you're running.

Win 9x (ie 95, 98, ME etc) are almost toally open and easy to bypass the security. If you're running XP, 2000 or NT and they've locked it down correctly you may be stuffed.

Since you can get to the wallpaper image, why not just change it to the size of the desktop, then the background colour won't matter as it'll be covered..

Re: Desktop locked

I HATE it when the users get creative with the desktop!!

Have you ever tried proxying into a machine that has a nice 24bit holiday snap
as the background? It takes for ever to draw!!

It depends if you want to P them off or not Richard

Re: Desktop locked

Of course if the IT dept have done the job well, they can get the login script to check the wallpaper size and date, and reinstall the correct image if it doesn't match. The user would soon get bored resetting it each time they logon.

I setup a similar system using Kix scripts so we could update everyones background image in one hit when required.

And i'm not 100% sure, but i think VNC doesn't bring the destop wallpaper across.

Re: Desktop locked

Hi GM,

Yep, I think your right about VNC unfortunately our clients control what method of proxy we have (pcanywhere or Proxy Master)

Err.. Has this gone off topic??

Re: Desktop locked

Well, I've managed it of sorts, by using the active desktop & displaying my image. As has been said, being windows 2000, I think the wallpaper is completely locked & I thought someone did say I needed a key to sort it when the hardware was installed. However its been a fun exercise & I've sort of proved a point.
