networks

We currently have 5 computers linked through a hub, is it possible to run the server and one other computer just by utilising a network cable? for a short period we only need two working whilst work is done on the other three

Re: networks

Hi Tony,
You can connect 2 computers together without using hub or a switch, but you will need a "special" cable. You can either buy one or make one up if you have the necessary tools.
They are generally called a "swap-over" cable.
If you can't get one, give me a call tomorrow on 024 7640 8118 (ask for me, Paul Blore) and I'll get one made up for you.
I run an IT networking company based in Coventry.
Alternatively, just keep the hub in place between the 2 computers and use the existing cables.
Cheers
Paul

Tony

I have a load of crossover cables here, you are welcome to have one, can drop one off next week somewhere, I don't live far, or if you need one, I have hubs, switches etc languishing in my garage.

Let me know what you want.

Rob

Nope, unless they are crossover cables, then they won't work.

If you look at the cables, they are flat 8 pin like a telephone connection. Have a look at them, and if the colours are transposed on pins 1/2 and 3/6 then it is a crossover.

The orange pair and the blue pair would be crossed from one end to tother. so on one end, pin 1 & 2 will be orange, the other end, pins 1 & 2 will be blue.

Let me know if you want to borrow a hub or just some cables.

Rob
