Help

I've ordered a new computer and as I'm a complete idiot as to the workings inside this big cream box, whats the easiest way to transfer all the stuff from one to another.

My present one has a 20gb and a 100gb hard drive, windows xp is on the 20gb drive, can I just transfer all the programmes onto the 100gb drive and put this in the new computer.

Re: Help

Hi Mike,

You will be able to copy over Data ie your docs, pictures that sort of thing.

Best way to do this is to go into Documents and Settings then profiles on C: and copy the contents of your profile to the new machine.

All Programes will need to be reinstalled on the new machine .

Re: Help

You could do it two ways:

1) Copy everything you want to keep to your second hard drive (100gb) and plug it into the new PC.

You may need to move the jumpers on the drive, depending on whether it was setup as a slave on IDE1 or or master on IDE2, or whether its set as a 'cable select' type.

2) buy a 4 port mini hub, plug the two together and suck the data accross the network. You could them keep the old pc as a file server and online backup facility.

Re: Help

I'd guess that most of your hard drive is taken up with your operating system (win 98/2000/xp etc) If so, why not writ my documents to a cd (assuming your old box has a cd writer) and then drag and drope into my docs on your new machine when you've got it up and running and are happy with it? I back my docs up like this once a month; cheap to do, and saves many tears if you get wormed and lose all your hard earned docs and pics. Bloody pooters, spawn of the devil!

Re: Help

Thanks Chaps,

It looks like transfering everything on to the 100gb drive is the answer. :thumb:

Adrian, the 100gb drive is already set as the slave, thanks. :thumb:

Or I might phone a very kind member of the forum, who has offered me telephone support, if I get into the dodo.

The new comp isn't coming till next Friday, so if you see I'm missing for ages, you know the reason.

Mike

I am probably going to Exeter show next weekend, so if you need a hand, I can help.

Re: Help

Cheers Rob, what a star, but it will more than likely be staying in the box till Monday, as I will be at the show all weekend. :thumb: :thumb:

I'll pick your brains though, when I see you.

Re: Help

Another silly question

The new comp has arrived, the hard drive is Serial ATA, is it ok to put in my 100GB serial IDE hard drive as the slave, are they compatable on the same board, I presume if it is OK that I connect it to spare light blue IDE port on the board.

Don't all laugh if I'm making a total pratt of myself.

Re: Help

Hi Mike,
that will be fine, just get bios to auto detect the new drive. If you have any problems give me a call.
Cheers

Re: Help

Hi Kev

Hope you and Helen enjoyed the show, nice to put a face to a name. :thumb:

Pic enclosed of the board, so the blue port arrowed is the spare IDE port and the white connector is obviousley the power cable.

Do I have to alter the bios, or will it just reconise the second hard drive when I boot up
