What did you do to the bonnet scoop entry hole?

Looking at the scoop hole in front of the air cleaner I am thinking it needs something doing to it.

So, did you get rid of the walls so there was a clean opening, insert mesh, do anything else?

Paul

Paul,

I cut out the opening, cleaned it up with a dremel, then stuck it back together using Gel Coat (inner/outer skins remember). Initially I had some mesh on it, however thought it looked naff so ditched it after a while.

Thanks Jim, so you mean the vertical walls that surround the opening were removed? If so that is pretty much what I am thinking of doing. You wouldn't happen to have a photo to demonstrate?

As supplied from GD my scoop had two ovals cut into it so giving a narrow vertical web in the middle and enough meat at each end to make a fixing point.
I decided to leave it as supplied and fitted an easily removable mesh useing 4mm fixings at each end and in the middle.
The mesh is steel with studs welded on the back then polished up a little and nickel plated.

the trevor "leave the hole and polish up some mesh" is far easier than fiddling with the gelcoat and filler.

Took me ages to get the bonnet scoop looking good, id do the mesh thing if i had the choice again

I have looked at many GDs and have seen very few scoops, less than 3!!, that look really neat and tidy. I cut mine out shortly after getting my shell about 5 years ago and have been wondering what to do about it ever since. It's an evil thing that to my inexperienced eye could have been bonded at that point during manufacture. Once you cut out the double skin there is nothing to hold the two skins together and I can't see how you can pop a bit of Gell in the gaps and hope it holds the skins together bearing in mind the vibration. I did think at one stage about putting some expanding foam filler in the void and hope that would bond things together before using some Gel but was worried it might have the opposite effect and force the skins apart. Being pretty hopeless with the GRP I would happily pay to get it sorted properly. Any takers???

I dunno if its any help, But I just cut the bonnet for the mk4 and used some black polyurethane-based sealant in the gap to about 15mm inside from the lip all the way round the cut. Seems to have bonded well. Used a whole tube though.
Nothing stopping you sanding this flat and applying coloured gel over the top on the sealed edge?

Cant comment on the scoop for the mk3 though.

Nice job, that is the best looking one I`ve seen.
May have to do something similar in the future.
