Engine Numbers

Since people have been talking about engines, i thought i'd check mine and found this:

GM = General Motors?

57LG = 5.7 litre
SGI

L098 = Dec 9th 19x8

14093638 = 1986 to 1994 (350 CI)

Anyone know what the SGI or the LG mean ?

I'm guessing they're not anything to do with a unique number as i found this picture on the internet, and its not my engine!

Re: Engine Numbers

Gary,

L098 is the casting date.

L is the 12th letter of the alphabet, so the engine was cast in the 12th month of the year (December)

09 is the day of the month and 8 is the year of the decade.

So my engine was cast on Dec 9th '19 something 8'

Since the Casting Number (1409363 only covers one '8' year (1986-1994) my engine must have been cast on 9th Dec 1988.

What i have yet to identify is what the other codes mean, and where it has a unique 'engine number' stamped.

Re: Engine Numbers

Dave,

When you say 'under the alternator' does that mean i would need to remove the bugger to see the number, or is it just 'in the vicinity of' the alternator ?

Re: Engine Numbers

There is a gap of about 1/2" between the back of the altermator and the front of the head....Down there.
