Italy trip

Hi

I'm thinking of taking the Beast (and the missus) on a trip to Italy in June or July. I know that German motor rail goes down as far as Bologna - the French motor rail stops at the border! The object of the exercise is to drive the coast road along the Amalfi peninsular south of Naples, but not to take a week getting there.
Has anyone done this trip and are there any recommended roads/hostelries between Bologna & Naples?

Many thanks
Lindsay

Hi Lindsay

I've motored to Venice on Numerous occassions in the tin-top, every time I do the journey I wish I was in the Cobra.

I know its not the area you are planning to go to, but the journey through France, Switzerland and into Itaty is stunning, It might be worth considering this route as you will pass within loads of beautifull lake scenes, especially when you arrive at Lake Garda in Italy.

We found an absolutely fabulous hotel with its own balcony overlooking Lake Garda for 50 euros a night per room, including breakfast.

Calais to Venice 820 miles
Calais to Lake Garda 710 miles

Re: Italy trip

Lindsay,

As I am sure many will vouch. Dont even think about going that far South on Public transport. In its defense, trains are excellent over there and I think you can do Nth>Sth Italy on a train for about 47p!!!

However.. Last Journey to Italy? did it loads when I was a boy. where it starts is the French/Swiss border. Place called Jougne. Its well above sea level but can see the enttrance to the Mont Blanc Tunnel which must be 5 miles away but seems like 20..

through the tunnel Into Switzerland and wo hoooooo. ever seen the start to the Italian Job? Thats what you get. Although if you see a JCB, slow down turn around and get going... Miles upon miles of going into tunnels and then over bridges that are way above sealevel... and when it's not, it's hairpin corners up and down mountains.... with lots of laybys where you can have a beer or a plate of frites!

Scenery is fantastic. Swiss/Italy border.. fab across Genoa onto the riviera? wind down over Portofino? Falt plains across the centre? hmmmph, suits you Sir..

Please please consider it.. Your trip is what cobras were designed for..!

Paul

Re: Italy trip

I'm planning a trip to Modena, so I can roar past some of those expensive Fiat things.

Don't forget to have "On Days Like These" playing (see the opening of The Italian Job)!

I look forward to your report,

Re: Italy trip

Just seem to remember that the Frenchies do not like taking kits or replicas on thier trains, I may be wrong but sure I heard a story about some poor blokes' hols ruined when he turned up in his Cobra and they would not let him on, best check this out if you do let the train take the strain, Simon

Re: Italy trip

Simon I think you're right. I'm sure Clarky and I got wind of something like when we went down to Le Mans. Not sure they're too keen on going through the tunnel..

Might be wrong..

Re: Italy trip

I had similar ideas but Continental motorail prices were way more than the petrol. I ended up taking the Plymouth-Santander ferry and doing the north of Spain and south of France. It is a rare wife that will withstand 500 miles of motorway in a Cobra - made that mistake getting to the ferry from Edinburgh - should have flown her ahead! The holiday is still refrred to as 'Monte Carlo or Bust'.
