Flywheel anyone?

For those of you that do know me, you will know how much fun my build has been so far! (NOT)

The latest problem can be seen in the two images below. I attempted to start my engine last weekend only to hear the solenoid fire and the starter whirr round. No movement from the engine itself. Why... because the bloomin flywheel is the wrong one! Turns out that my gearbox / bellhousing combination is correct but the flywheel is 157 tooth and not 164 tooth.

Never ending disasters I say. What comes of believing what people say when the reckon that they know what you need! :whatever::whatever::whatever:

Iain

Surely another 7 teeth isn't going to take up that gap, are you sure the starter is mounted correctly.

Re: Flywheel anyone?

You have a point there Mike - it does look a large gap for 7 teeth difference.
Maybe a re-count is called for Iain?

Re: Flywheel anyone?

Iain,

Is this engine a Ford 302? I was asking the teeth quantity question on the US Windsor forum a week or so ago, up shot is for my 72 engine the 157 tooth is right, if you look on ford motorsport they list the 157 tooth. http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts/part_details.asp?PartKeyField=6141 :thumb:

I also got some good answers on this site too, not sure how to put club site links in a post sorry!

If yours isnt a 302 then ignore all this!!

Cheers

Re: Flywheel anyone?

Speaking from a Chevy perspective, and from someone who's gone through two flywheels and two starters before mine fitted..

Is the starter correct, and does it have variable bolting positions? The Chevy Hi torque one can be bolted in several places to account for differing flywheels.

Bit of an arse though. Stick with it. Took me a while to get everything lined up and spinning. Worth it in the end!

Re: Flywheel anyone?

I'll try and fill in as best I can.

The Toploader gearbox I have requires the bellhousing for a 164 tooth flywheel (which I have). Other gearboxes you may have the same one, the other one or even a cast iron one etc.

The diameter of a 157 tooth flywheel is 13.294 inches (or near as damit 337.668mm)
The diameter of a 164 tooth flywheel is 14.215 inches (or near as damit 361.061mm)
The difference in diameter is 23.393mm or talking in terms of radius 11.697mm

Trust me guys, the starter is mounted correctly and the gap is about what I am seeing. What's more that starter is supposed to be for a 157 tooth flywheel but after using the infamous "Pi" and a bit of maths the difference in pitch tooth on the flywheel is less than 0.2mm which means that I should not have to change the starter.... hopefully!

Re: Flywheel anyone?

Hi Steve,

I've got the problem sussed, it's just a matter of getting the new flywheel. Thanks go to Wilf (Ford God), a chap at Real Steel, Adricar2 (I thinkthat's his nick) and Brian at Repower.

Hopefully I'll get a flywheel next weekend and maybe the Saturday after I might get the engine breathing fire... Lets hope!

Cheers.
