Brakes for track use+exhaust noise

Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade the disc brakes on my cobra being built by Dave Brookes to allow for some sustained track work. Contacted AP Racing and they can do me a very nice pair of 6 pots up front and 4 pot rears on 356mm x 30mm discs - cost a mere £3300. I tried to contact Tarox (Italian) via their website but they didn't come back to me. Does anyone have any other options or have successfully fitted some larger discs and calipers to their cobra? I know there will be those out there who say why upgrade - the current discs offered by Dax are more than adequate. Sure for road use but they do fade after a lap or two on the track and you then have to take the corners nice and slow (according to Gary at Dax).

Also got another question regarding track noise compliance. I notice most tracks have a noise limit which varies from 102-105db or so. Do cobras typically comply with this and if they don't how do you get to drive them on a track?

Thanks for any help and advice you can give me.

Andrew

Re: Brakes for track use+exhaust noise

Andrew re the DB limit this can be as low as 98db as Goodwood is, they test it at 3/4 of your rev range max, and also check it out whilst you are going round at some places!

I use Mintex 1172 half race on the Jaguar set up which improves fade on the track but I must say I could do with some more but not at that kind of money you mentioned!!! Osgood

Goodwood can be as low as that Andy but they sometimes have unlimitied days too..

I tihn k you can probably ring the track or track day organisers before committing yourself to a runaround.

And also I would say that 105 is quite high..

Paul.

ps, Are you the same Andy Marshall? I am sure dave built one for you (?) a few years back?

Re: Brakes for track use+exhaust noise

I'm not the same guy, but I know who you are talking about - Dave mentioned that he is building a car with a 600bhp engine (not a cobra) for Andy Marshall, which was quite a coincidence.
I'll keep pestering Tarox for a quote.
Osgood, what was your dB level when you did Goodwood and how did you get it down to 98dB? Can you soften the noise before you go on the track and then remove it when you hit the track or do they test you just before you go on the track? Cheers

Hi Andrew.
I've been talking to a Jag specialist and there may be a solution on the horizon for less money that could use the XJR 4 pot front calipers and bigger discs. Cheap they aint' but compared to AP they are a snip.

I might have been talking about XKR rather than XJR......All too confusing for me, but I have seen these things and they are made by Brembo.

Andrew 98 DB is standard for Goodwood and most other tracks some times as been said there are exceptions. I had 4 straight through boxes on at that time which were under-slung now have side pipes, the higher levels are normally at airfields Bassingbourne near Royston last year was 103 DB. They test you before you go out, if you are way over the top you cant get on. Measured 1 foot from the rear of the pipes @ 30 degs at 5,250 revs in my case much like an SVA test. I have seen all sorts of devises that just clip on for the day, that includes a coke cans with small hole held on the tail pipe with a jubilee clip Osgood

Re: Brakes for track use+exhaust noise

I got my brakes from Hi-spec (Geof 01322286850)
front 355mm x 35mm grooved rotors, 6 pot billet calipers + green stuff pads
rear 310mm x 25mm grooved rotors, 4 pot billet calipers + green stuff pads

total price including brackets and bells - £2,500

I have not run them yet, but if you can wait two months until I get the car on the road I will let you know how they work.

I have a pic of them in my gallery.
