Dax Build Sequence And Garage Dimensions Question

Hi All,

I was planning on building a Pilgrim, but it now looks like it will be a Dax. I have a few questions about the build sequence, inspired by the fact that I am quite limited for garage and storage space.

1. It seems that there is a lot more construction work to do on the body before fitting to the chassis compared to the Pilgrim. Can anyone give me a brief rundown on the build sequence? I have the construction manual, but would like a quick pointer as to how long it is before the two big bits are united.

2. I have a single garage, 7'6" by 14". Do I put the body in there to work on and leave the chassis outside in the front yard to begin with, or vice versa?

3. The back door to the garage leading to the back yard is 2'5" wide by 6'5" high. Would I be able to get the engine (Chevy 5.7 with Borg Warner box) through this door for storage in the back yard until I am ready for it?

4. Would either the chassis or body go through this door for temporary storage until I am ready to work on them?

For a number of reasons I am having to get all the parts in one go, so I need to find space to store it all. Thanks in advance for any help,

Finn.

RE: Dax Build Sequence And Garage Dimensions Question

Mighty Finn,

I put my Body on stilts for about 2 months and raised it above the chassis until I was ready for it. Working is cramped and awkward if you have to do it in the garage, but as soon as you get to rolling chassis stage you just wheel it outside and carry on.

Rgds

Jim

RE: Dax Build Sequence And Garage Dimensions Question

One thing you could consider is one of these garden canapés you see in ASDA etc for outside parties. They are surprisingly cheep and if you have the space in your back yard you could put the Shell under one to work on it, while leaving the chassis in the garage protected from the elements.
They don’t have sides to them but I would think plastic sheeting hung down the sides would work ok.

Good luck with it

RE: Dax Build Sequence And Garage Dimensions Question

I ditto the others.
I made a stand for the body high in the single garage,
assembled the chassis goes together realy quick very satifiying and is soon rolling.
as for the body before fitting put on tressels and if using bulkhead kit,
trial fit the pedal box and cut holes for servo and clutch master cylinder then
offer the bulkhead cover on and mark the holes through to the f/glass, then
take the covers off and cut the holes.
You will find it alot easyier leaning in at this height opposed to when it is on the chassis on the floor.
As for the rest only carry out any task on the car when you are the right frame of mind not tired.
I am sure any builder will agree with this and it dont matter whos kit your
building.I could also advise not to tell the wife how much you are spending
not the whole truth at least.
Hope this helps.

RE: Dax Build Sequence And Garage Dimensions Question

Any word on which bits I will be able to get through the back door and out into the back yard?

I like the idea of "double decking" the chassis and body in the garage - I wasn't too keen on leaving the body tub in the front yard in case the local hoodlums decided to mess with it. I'll look at the garage tonight to see if I have enough space to suspend the tub from the rafters.

Yup I did likewise too. An added advantage is that with the body up at chest height, the flashlines & wheelarches are much easier to tackle- saves the knees & back. (I used 2 bits of 4 by 2 & made up some tressles for supports)

Cheers

Finn,

What you need to get hold of is a selve levitating body like I used.
