Rover V8 Pricing

After scrapping the v6 idea for a sumo and hearing a v8 rumble my plans are set.

I've found a rover v8 (carb fed sd1) for £200 its suffering low oil pressure when it was taken out about 6 months ago and dry stored. I believe it needs the main bearings changed at least.

As I havent a clue how much work this is going to cause me (books are in the post). It doesnt include the carbs etc just the main block including rocker covers, I was wondering if this is a good price?

Thanks for all the help.

Craig.

Re: Rover V8 Pricing

Craig,

Sounds a bit pricey to me, you can get any number of RV8 base engines off Ebay for £50-£100 in various states of dis-repair and with various levels of parts missing.

Last Dec I bought a complete running RR 3.5 carb and torqueflite box. I bought it for the box only and so have a complete motor spare. The only bit it's missing is a flywheel (auto) - again Ebay no problem. I saw and heard the motor run - currently if you connect up electric, fuel and water it will start.

(It's not the prettiest thing in the world but yours for less money than your talking for the motor you've seen, if your interested.)

I have an Auto flywheel surplus to requirements, if anyone's interested. Postage cost only.

Re: Rover V8 Pricing

thanks for the offers, I'll keep the RR engine in mind just transport is the trouble for me. I was really after a sd1 with the higher power etc. but a cheap RR might be the option. I'll see what I can do on the price or you may be hearing from me lol.

Re: Rover V8 Pricing

Russ,

I know this is a bit of a long shot, but do you still have this block going? I'm slowly cleaning up the block I have got and its missing bits and there going to cost me a small country to get all them all from rimmers/real steal.

Hey craig,

try talking to Steve Lund at www.lundengines.com He is invariably helpful and friendly, and will give you good honest advice. I know he was recently selling a professionally rebuit 3.5 for not much more than you paid for yours! Sorry.

Re: Rover V8 Pricing

Thst's why it's not always the best idea to buy what appears to be a cheap engine with a few bits missing! Complete cut-out is always the way to go, in my opinion, even if the motor's is not quite as good as another less complete one.

Fortunately I do still have a spare motor. Absolutely complete except no flywheel and now no sump (it was a special that goes with the gearbox that was on the engine when I bought it). I was just about to buy a sump on ebay and do a re-build of the engine for an ebay sale, but you can have it if you want. I'll pm you my phone number (or its in the front of Snake Torque - Treasurer) and you can give me a call if you're interested.
