How to get a classic plate

Ok, please correct me if I am wrong here ! Am I correct in thinking to get a classic 'black & white' reg plate on a jag based car (with axles already bought pre-refurbed), I can go the following route :

THE 'NEARLY' LEGIT WAY - Buy a pre 1974 'V5 only' from a breakers (cost approx £300 !!) and try and register my car that way and put my black and silver plates straight on the car (after mr registration man gives me an age related plate). Although I understand that although I have an age related plate, the car is still registered as a new car so officially I cant use the black and white plates ? Will I benefit from tax free ?

THE 'NOT SO' LEGIT WAY - Buy a 1986-7 Jag V5 with the donor parts (for £25) and then get my car registered for that year. Then go to 'ebay' and get myself a 'pre 1963 - 3x3 plate' (ie 444 MSF) total cost approx £350. Then put this plate onto my car on a black and white plate. Only problem with this (apart from the legality) is that Cobras were not actually built before 1963 were they ????!!!

What will be the minimum 'legit' year for a cobra (ie when were they first available to buy).

I couldnt believe the amount of 'obvious' non-legit black and white plates on cars at Duxford (even on Q plates) !! do you peeps ever get pulled ?!

Thoughts ?

Marcus

RE: How to get a classic plate

According to the encyclopedia of classic cars, the 4727cc 289 was available from 1964, in 1965 shelby shoehorned a 6.989cc into one and entered the record books in 1967.

I'm sure if this is wrong some one will correct it! :7

As for the black plates, ther was a recent discussion on this, try a search...up shot was the rules are vague and have a wrong/damaged plate is a £30 fine I believe.

RE: How to get a classic plate

Hi there I take it your car will be SVA'd then registered if you are using a donor then you will get an age related number(not tax free)and the log book will say registered 2002 built from parts but you cannot change the plate for one newer than the donor even though the vehicle is reg,2002(I tried)you can change it for an older plate though. Re black and white plates if you get pulled then you could be up for a fine but then most police seem more interested in the car so good luck
cheers
Paul

RE: How to get a classic plate

Marcus, the cut off point for black and white plates was 1971 I think after that date they whent to the currant colours.

As has allready been mentioned the old bill would not know that the vehicle was of a late vintage unless they did a check, hardly likely as one out of ten cars seem to have illegal plates for one reason or another these days.

Also as pointed out the fine for incorrect plates is peanuts anyway, as the Cobra shape was prior to 1971 I can't see a problem. Eric

Unfortunately there is no way you will get tax exempt... trust me... this tight Yorkshireman has looked down every avenue.

Regarding black and silver plates.... do your car age related... then get an old number and put the plates on it.

So if you get a fine?

RE: How to get a classic plate

Tax free, only before 1975. i have black and silver plates 1975, illegal yes
if i get pulled up i will plead colour blindness. Actually i got pulled two weeks ago, but only to be informed by a very polite police man , that high performance cars are being nicked in my area by thiefs who are using fishing rods
to poke thru letter boxes and get the car keys,so don't leave your keys so they can be seen, also people are being followed home by theifs who then know where you live, so if you are being followed near your home go around the block a few times before you pull up in your drive.

HAPPY BLASTING

Graham

RE: How to get a classic plate

Graham your right mate you are colour blind, or so Val says, cant see those silver taps with colour dots on in the tolletries area after relieving yourself!!

On a serious note though this also happens when selling your vehicle or as you say, being followed home!! People ring up asking all sorts of questions, has it got a roof, upholtsry trim colours, do you keep it out side. I have even heard of people leaving the vehicle out for prospective buyers to view while they are at work!! If it matches there requirements for the paper work & doc's they have, it wont be there when you return from your hard days graft.

Cobras a easey meat for this I would think. All the best Eric.:9

Marcus

Go for it any way you want, my donar was a 1983 A prefix and I would have been issued with an age related plate, but I had the plate showed on the enclosed pic on retention which I have put on my COB. Bolloc*s to the fine.
