Dry sump - should I buy it?

I've been offered a dry sump kit for my LS1. It's second hand but includes the pan, lines, pump etc. and is for a lot less than a new one. The guy wants $1100 (£570)

Any comments as to the minus points of the dry sump would be appreciated

Re: Dry sump - should I buy it?

Unless you have problems with the existing system, the dry sump system will not really offer any benefit. It allows you to mount the engine lower in the car, or lower the whole car but this is probably not practical for road use, they are usually low enough to get the odd scrape anyway.

It is another belt to break, and when it does you have NO oil pressure.

Some systems have a problem whereby if you leave the car for a while, the header tank slowly empties into the sump, filling it completely. You have to have some sort of oil shut-off valve to stop this occuring.

Just a few thoughts, really you could spend you money better elsewhere unless you are a really serious track user and are happy with driving a race car on the road.

The minus point is the £570.
As its uneccesary as I guess you are not competing the motor I would think the concensus would be dont do it. Spend it on something nice (and useful) - like the wife.

Mike.

Not married.

You are probably right... I've got to buy a new oil pan though unless I can fix the leak in mine (needs welding)

Hi Robin. As the others have said, Not needed and more to go wrong. You're in the right place to get a new pan at the moment Miloden stock replacement pans are $99 over there :thumb: And do you have the space for the tank?

Where can you buy the Miloden pan from? I've had a look and can't see it anywhere

Re: Dry sump - should I buy it?

Robin

you should be able to weld yours, I recall you mentioned the hole was pinhole sized.

I am in the process of swapping in a vette sump, and if that works fine I'll have a LS camaro sump available.......let me know if you're interested

Re: Dry sump - should I buy it?

Could well be interested, Steve. How much are you likely to want for it? I assume it's the same as the sump I've got on mine. Where did you get your 'vette sump from?

Re: Dry sump - should I buy it?

Why not fit an oil accumulator instead.

Re: Dry sump - should I buy it?

Could do... just prefer the idea of a dry sump, especially as my oil pan was not deemed good enough for the Corvette version as it suffered windage problems (hence why Steve is uprating his). Might not bother at the moment
