MOT fail - Suspension problem

Help anyone!

I have a Dax cobra first registered in 1987. I had an MOT on Wednesday and I failed on the under car inspection. Reason for failure is

Suspension arm - mounting /bush/s defective - nearside rear, outer

In N Ireland MOT is not done by local garage but Department Agency and for safey reasons they will not let you under the car so I couldn't see exactly where the problem was

I can't see where the problem is. The bushes on the coils look ok. Is there a bush in the Dax radius arm? I can't see anythng on either side. Are there any other bushes - could it be the end of the wishbone to the hub carrier is the problem?

The wheel has movement of you apply a rocking motion into toward the axle at the six o'clock and 12 o'clock position - about 1/8 - 1/4 inch. There is no movment at other angles round the wheel and if you turn the wheel the movement stays at 6 and 12. the axle stub housing does seem to move a little in the 6-12 angle only. The other wheel (drivers side) has exactly the same movement but was not recorded as a fail.

I know this is difficult to diagnose from a written description but does any one have nay thoughts - I am still learning my way here!

Regards

Stephen

Due to someone scamming the site you now need a minimum of 25 ( I think ) posts before you can use the p.m. system.

Re: MOT fail - Suspension problem

Ken,

thanks for the reply.

I got so frustrated with this problem that I contacted the Belfast test centre and asked to speak to the tester as I could not identify the problem. There is some play in the wheel in the "north-south" direction but I would not call it excessive. This is what he is concerned about - also he pointed out the wishbone shaft appeared to be closer to the top of the bearing in the hub carrier than the bottom -indicating wear.

I am not convinced that these two points are at all related - The play in the wheel is more from the hub bearing in my view. Anyway, I have to do something or it will not pass so I have removed the hub carrier this evening and it is going to Jag Axles in the morning for replacement with a refurbed one - there is some evidence of wear in the hub bearing.
