MOT testing - again !!

I know this subject has been covered many times but the answer still doesn't seem to be black and white . Do I need another MOT test because it is coming up to 1 year since the SVA (and the MOT test I did for peace of mind). Some indications are that it is not requred for three years and others are that it needs to be done every year from day 1. The cob was built from a donor and has an age related plate, if that makes any difference

I would like to get it right for the insurance to be valid .

Any comments gratefully received.

Keith

If it's built from donar parts, you will more than likely need an MOT every year.

You will get a road tax reminder at least 2 weeks before it is due, if it does need an MOT it will be on the form as a document that has to be produced, just the same as an Insurance certificate. :thumb: :thumb:

Re: MOT testing - again !!

If it needs doing it will tell you on your road tax reminder ( that is if they coincide ) otherwise don't bother. I MOT'd mine and now I have to get it done every year as that is what is clearly marked on the road tax reminder.

Re: MOT testing - again !!

Jake,

I too had an MOT before my SVA test and wondered what the procedure would be the following year. My SVA was December 2003 but I didn't get my registration through until Feb 2004 (no real problem as I haven't got a roof yet and have been a soft southern p### for the last 20 years). Over this last winter, I kept my cobra garaged until the DVLA sent a Road Tax reminder stating that I needed to show my Insurance only - no MOT required!

If you can afford to, wait for the tax reminder, otherwise give the DVLA a call and they'll tell you for sure.

Ken

Re: MOT testing - again !!

I believe that tha MOT stations are now "On line".......................Well one is at least. My brother in law took a car yesterday and the DVLA tells you now if the brakes are a pass or not.

Re: MOT testing - again !!

Just my view, I always get the Cobra MOT'd as a second pair of eyes is reassurance. If you think it will fail, then the Police could have you, etc.

Just a question, do people still have problems with MOT centres looking at Kit Cars. My local one is brilliant!!!.

Re: MOT testing - again !!

Keith, just to add some more confusion: I have my V11 tax reminder in front of me and it states that i need to produce to get a tax disc
a valid insurance certificate/cover note
a valid test certificate (eg MOT), if required

so it doesn't say on mine whether i need one or not, for £30 or so i had someone professional look over my car and it passed with flying colours
hope this helps (?) :thumb:

Re: MOT testing - again !!

The people at the Post Office will have to decide if you car needs an MOT or not, they decide by looking at the V5 and checking the date of registration. If it's under 3 years then they don't ask for one.
As said above though, it's good practice to get your car checked anyway.

Re: MOT testing - again !!

Again there seems to be no sure answer; surely if a vehicle meets the criteria of not needing a MOT after its SVA then surely it should be treated as a new vehicle and not legally require one for the next 3 years. (Putting aside the obvious piece of mind of having your vehicle checked).
So does anyone actually know the Law on this one?
Prehaps one for the "Local Constabularies in our midst"

Paul
