Shocks

Hi Guys

I need to know what settings you have your shocks set up on I.E how many turns
to get the right firmness, at the moment (Iv'e tried others ) they are on 4 clicks, and i can still feel the bumps. If i need new shocks what make ,type are the best for a good ride without bump steer, or is bump steer caused by something else. Also if i re-new all the front bushes what are the best to use.

Graham

RE: Shocks

Graham - I suspect there is no definitive "number of clicks" on shockers - it will vary greatly from make to make, and from car to car.
It is my view that most folks run with the shocks too firm in the belief that doing so somehow will increase/improve handling.
I don't suscribe to this myself, and my own method of adjusting them is to firm them up a notch at a time until the ride becomes uncomfortable, then back off a touch.

Bump steer has nowt to do with the shocks - its about the geometry of the steering rack/track rods etc. Unless you can alter the physical height at which your rack is installed, what you get is what you've got. Sure someone else far more qualified (or full of bs) than I will expand on that one.

Wilf

RE: Shocks

Graham,
As Wilf says really depends on what you have. My car has the "old"type Sapx which only have 10 adjusting notches (though they will turn forever in a clockwise direction, just that they get no stiffer after 10 clicks. Newer type Spax have 28 clicks.

I followed the "Wilf method" below and have ended up at 7 all round. I did go the whole hog to 10 once just to see what it was like - bloody uncomfortable!

good luck - at least its an easy job to do!

RE: Shocks

Graham.
Your chassis (if 1994 on) is capable of zero bump steer so it must be something you can set.
Spax shocks ......2 clicks per shock.
Gaz shocks........8 clicks per shock.
You don't need to set you Dax too stiff as the suspension is capable of working very well......You do have an anti roll bar fitted, don't you!
Put around 20-22psi in your tyres if you are running 17" wheels.
Check camber, tracking and castor at both ends.
And that should do the trick.

RE: Shocks

Hi Dave

After mucking about with the settings i found that five clicks made a big improvement especially on the A roads, however around the country lanes i can still feel some bumps when going over potholes, but i will suffer that.

Thanx for your replies guys. when reading all the information on Robs site and
answering most peoples problems and solving them, no one should moan about getting the club magazine late as this sevice here alone is worth more than your membership
cost. to all of you who help other members with advise, well done, keep it up.

RE: Shocks

Graham, you old T---rt you only had to ask, as most guys have said shocker setting have nothing too do with bump steer. Bump steer is the ammount of movement that is created to alter the tracking as you go over a bump; as you car is pretty standard type Dax I dont think your problem lies in that direction? But your leaving us anyway which is a great diserpointment altghough your rear end leaves a lot to be desired!!!!!!!!!?? Regards Eric & Liz.

RE: Shocks

Eric,

I think what Graham really needs is "shock" treatment to get him out of this current state of mind!!!
