chevy 350 & auto box

All,
Just a quick hello, I'm just about to join your merry group as I have a Dax chassis arriving early Nov. I have been following your chats for a few weeks.... cool banter.

As a first timer I have a general question.

I have sourced a Chevy 350, I have also been offered a TH350 auto box. Question.... what are the pros and cons of an auto box?

RE: chevy 350 & auto box

Hi Steve.
If you want to use the auto box you must call Dax straight away as the chassis will need to be modified slightly from a std manual version.

Even with the Auto box the car will still be great fun to drive, and with the torque of a Chevy engine you'll still be able to spin the rear wheels if you want.}>

The only other advice would be to try to get a diff with a low ratio because you won't have an over driven top gear, something like a 3.058 for a std diff or a 3.07 or 2.88 for a power lock........These will give your car the longer legs it will benefit from on long motorway runs. stay away from 3.31 and 3.54 ratios as you will be over revving your engine.........Bl**dy quick off the mark though.}> }>

RE: chevy 350 & auto box

The only draw back really is if you ever decide to sell your car I think you would be looking at alot smaller market of people wanting an auto??

Plus with a car like this is an auto really what you want:9 :9

On the posative side manual boxes are expensive x( x(

Best of luck either way Martin

Martin,
i take your point on the resell value... I drive a sequential as a road car and would really love to go that way in the future. This auto comes with the engine so I could use it in the short term and then go for a sequential in the future (£7000 quoted).

thanks for the comments.

Dave,
Yes, I have informed DAX of the auto, its just all as i read about is manuals, so a bit of self questioning going on about the decision to take the auto.

On the dif, DAX recommended the 3.54.1 power lock.... can you offer any further thoughts on the subject.

cheers

RE: chevy 350 & auto box

Hi Steve.
The TH350 is only a 3 speed box and top gear is 1:1 ratio at best so you would not have the advantage of an over driven top/5th gear for any motorway type journeys and you wouldn't want to be driving down the motorway doing 77 MPH with your engine running at 3500rpm when it only wants to rev at 5000RPM flat out.
Here are some ratios and their respective speeds at 2000 RPM (Good cruising revs).
2.88:1...........54 mph
3.058:1..........51 mph
3.07:1...........50 mph
3.31:1...........47 mph
3.54:1...........44 mph

Typical 5th gear ratio (Taken from Borg Warner T5 Manual)
2.88:1...........73 mph
3.058:1..........68 mph
3.07:1...........68 mph
3.31:1...........63 mph
3.54:1...........59 mph

RE: chevy 350 & auto box

“Salle” from the USA got the right combination a T-56 that fit in the space of a T-5 and use the T-5 bell housing.

“TREMEC's GM aftermarket replacement T-56 six speed is designed to replace the T5 five speed.”

So you can use the standard clutches parts and slave cylinder (push instead of pull-type)

See the site with pictures, dimensions and instructions.
