351 windsor!

hi,
has anyone got any ideas? i have a 351w engine that i purchased from the engine factory and as great as it looks, none of our good ole metric nuts and bolts fit, where can i get yankee threads from? ie: exhaust manifold studs, engine mount bolts, any ideas would be great!
i have phoned repower and their 1st question was what size threads do you want? i don't know!!
thanks
colin

Re: 351 windsor!

Hi Colin

I used this place for most of my nuts and bolts.

http://www.namrick.co.uk/

Most off the threads on American V8's seem to UNC threads and there may be some UNF threads in there as well.

If you don't know what size you need and you don't have a tap and die set, then you could buy a bolt of each thread, then mark the thread on each and use them as thread gauges.

Craig.

Re: 351 windsor!

I didn't keep the Imperial threads to just the engine on my Dax build.

About 99% of the nuts and bolts used on my car are UNF thread. I just prefer them for some reason. Metric threads allways seem too course for my liking.

Maybe its beacuse I also own Land Rovers and Range Rovers.

Craig.

Re: 351 windsor!

I bought mixed bags of nuts bolts and washers in UNC and UNF for £4 a bag at an autojumble to replace some of my rusty nuts (?!) Got to be the cheap way. there are literally dozens of ebay sellers doing stainless UNF UNC assortments too.

Re: 351 windsor!

the idea is great steve - I spent hours trying to work out whether it was feasible too. The trouble is that stainless has different properties to normal steel and if you look on the web there are some good articles about it. It is not difficult to work out what the properties of the stainless are if you get it from a good supplier - the difficulty is working out the properties of the bits that you've got to do a comparison. After many hours and headaches I gave up. Ok for shiny bits though.

You can cheat a little.
If you go to summit racings site and do a search for the particular bolts you need (ie search for bolts, ford, windsor, header bolts) you should get the right size. Then just order from your local bolt supplier.

Good Luck

Re: 351 windsor!

some of the fancy arp kits from summit dont always cover every stud,im missing some from the waterpump/timing cover area due to the amount of different fitments
a nut and bolt supplier is your best bet, take some along and match up
