Chevy starter motor

Damn !!! all ready to drive up to the donnington show tomorrow, then the starter packs up. No problem, I thought, I have a spare, brand new chevy starter, I'll put that on....WRONG...it doesn't fit.
Can someone explain the differences so I order the right one from real steal on monday? The new (wrong) starter is on the left
Thanks

Re: Chevy starter motor

Hi Simon,

Chevy flywheels come in two sizes. Small, 153 tooth and large 168 tooth. If your new starter does not engage the flywheel teeth, then you have a small flywheel, with the new starter for a large flywheel, or vise versa. To be sure, get someone to manual crank the engine and count the teeth.
The easiest fix is to get a starter motor which incorporates dual fitment with 4 bolt holes (use one of the two sets).

Re: Chevy starter motor

hi simon did you think of robbing the brushes from the 'good' one to fit the original? they're so easy to swap.....10 mins max ...yes really!!
or even the solenoid isn't impossible...

Re: Chevy starter motor

Hi,

Looks like the starter on the right in the picture is a staggered bolt pattern. Do they both bolt up ok?

Some chevy blocks have straight bolt holes for the starter, some are staggered and some blocks have holes for both patterns.

Regards
Chris
