Robin

Well done on a sucessful build, just a couple of minor points to cear up and you are away

Bad luck getting lost on the way home!! Guess it must have been the fog and the fact your rear fog light was at the wrong angle, it obviously makes all the difference

There isn't such a thing as simple Logic, logic is a discipline that studies a distinction both by determining the conditions under which the truth of certain beliefs leads naturally to the truth of some other belief, and by drawing attention to the ways in which we may be led to believe something without respect for its truth. This provides no guarantee that we will always arrive at the truth, since the beliefs with which we begin are sometimes in error. But following the principles of correct reasoning does ensure that no additional mistakes creep in during the course of our progress. :finger: :thumb:

Can't fault that...

Just hope I can rectify this steering problem, then I can phone up for a lovely retest and take my MAC with me (although I discovered today that anything not bolted down in an open top car will exit the vehicle, so I'll lock it in the boot)

Surely some forms of logic are easier to understand than others and could thus be described as "simple"? For example, Boolean logic could be said to be "simple" whereas complex logic is well known to electronics engineers

Yes, but we are not talking about computers or electronics, we are talking about Adrian. :finger: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Robin - congratulations. Whilst disapppointing, that really was not a bad result, nothing difficult to correct, and nothing to indicate that your basic build was anything less than perfect.

You might find a bit more toe-in will help with the self centering as well as altering the castor angle - GD should advise on the best approach. "it loosens up with time" is not really a helpful comment, since you have no time/opportunity to put miles on it.

PS - for anyone watching, I humbly apologise for being so blatantly helpful towards/supportive of, GD owners. It is easier than arguing with them.

s'pose you could try just ever so slightly slackening the rack input shaft retainign plate bolts (assuming its that type of rack), if it goes nice and free you k ow the preloads a little tight, which would free up in a few miles, and you could lockwire the bolts just cracked back slightly for the retest then tighten em up when you get home to bed the rack in?

Wilf.
In this instance, You are Forgiven

Robin.
The forces produced by properly setup castor angles should be more than enough to overcome the newest of racks.

Well done Robin, only a few niggles to sort out. I have heard of tyre pressures being increased (in one instance the max the tyre specified) in the front wheels to help self centre for SVA. This was done on site whilst the tester was having a coffee! Wouldn't want to drive any distance using this option though:thumb: Bodger...... me......nah, adapt and overcome! I personally would have a play with the castor shims.

Re: I've got my test results back... they've given me 6 mont

All good comments, I spoke to Trevor on the phone and apparently the GD way to align the steering column is to have all the UJ's (there are 3) on the same plane - mine aren't, as I didn't think it was necessary. I'll realign them and confer with GD as to what happens next if that doesn't rectify the problem.

GD Euro chassis leave the factory with 4-5 degrees of castor already. GD aren't keen for me to start tweaking the suspension as it will knock all sorts of other things out of alignment.
