MOT using chassis number

Hi all,

I had my tin-top MOT'd the other day & raised the subject of MOTing my Cob prior to the SVA. I've used the same MOT "centre" for a long time, they have always been very good and helpful in the past , if somewhat lacking in the IT Skills necessary to operate the new fangled computerised MOT system.

After a lot of thought & consternation, They said that they could do an "unofficial" MOT, but not an official one as the car was not recorded on their system. True, the Registration number isnt, 'cos it aint got one, but my suggestion that they enter the chassis number and do it against that almost caused a nervous breakdown. (its that computer thing again!)

Has anyone else come across this? They are either too thick to realise it can be done, just dont want to do it or the hassle of finding out.

Am I being naive in assuming that my MOT can be done officially & recorded as such, or is it time to find another MOT station for the cob, which would be a pity as they are actually quite trustworthy blokes.

Ta.

Chris

Re: MOT using chassis number

I had an MOT carried out pre SVA and registration, they were quite happy to use the chassis number, this was early last year so unless somethings changed I can't see a big deal.

Insurance was the same, used the chassis number until car was registered with DVLA, car was driven to the MOT and SVA covered by the chassis number.

I think each test station has it's own ideas on what can and can't be done

Re: MOT using chassis number

Pefectly legal to have an MOT on a VIN number. Suspect they just didn't know how to drive the new s/w. I phoned up a couple of places a month or so ago and at least one receptionist refused to book me in as computer says no...
