motox bike decisions decisions please help

Hi chaps im in need of some advice. After standing the R6 right up on its **** end not so long ago and nearly doing a backflip infront of alot of pedestrians making me feel really small and stupid ive realised its time to go off road and get some practice in.

Im after a 250cc two stroke but after looking online and in the dealers im torn. There are so many to choose from and Im really not sure which one to go for. It will be new so therefore that should eliminate any specific problems with certain models.

I really like the look of the Yamaha but with KTM, Suzuki, Honda and Kawasaki all doing the same size bike I really dont know. Im hoping the biker boys on the club can lead me in the right direction, is it just a case of there all the same just in different colours or are some better than others.

Im not going competitive just want something to practice some wheelies, stoppies and burnouts on so that when the summer comes and my full tint visor goes down on the R6 I will have perfected them and above said pedestrians will cheer instead of laugh at me.

    Thanks in anticipation

Anthony, if you have neaver road motox bikes before i would highly suggest that you start off with a 125 cc, then once you think you can handle that then move up to the 250's the 125's are alot lighter and alot more easyer to throw about and they will teach you alot! i have used to race moto-x when i was 10 untill about 16 started off with a school boy honda cr 85, then i went to the 125's when i was about 14, i only then had a go ona 250 when i was 16! i had a yz250 , very good bike easy to ride and maintain, with the ability to wheelie in every gear!!

    anyway be sensible! :thumb:

id go with the yam yz,great looking bike, awesome performance,i only have a 125 but its very quick ,the only downside is the power band on a 2 stroke its very much all or nothing,im considering a 4 stroke next as most of my riding is on muddy hilly terrain where the 2 stroke suffers a bit as there isnt much torque, you get caught out if your not in the power band and revving the nuts off it,if its fairly decent ground your riding then the 2 stroke would be the best fun, they are a very quick machine and sound the bollox

    wise words from wise man!

but i would start off on a 125, off road bikes are tooootaly different to on road bikes and the 125's have plenty of power for the track.

From what I've seen, when a biker rides past with a wheel in the air, it's not "WOW" that people say, it's another word entirely that starts with W:whatever:

Re: motox bike decisions decisions please help

cheers chaps for those comments so far. I have had off roaders before but it was about 8 years ogo had a suzuki RM125 back then which was a nimble machine and very nippy. Like everything though the market has moved on and im a bit out of touch hence my dilema. Ground conditions will be good and my choice for a 250 is purely because anything bigger I feel would be over powered. I rode a friends KTM 525SX last year and I still have arm pump now. Ive started making a track in our field which is firm ground with a very gentle incline.

Some of the people that work with me have these bikes and for my purpose have warned me off of 4 strokes as they are hard to start and can be alot more costly to maintain which I understand as a 2 stroke just needs new rings etc every now and then.

I understand about learning to ride what I have now but if I can keep all my spills and brusies in a field and make myself safer on the road then surely that isnt a bad idea.

I know self praise is no recomendation but i can hold my own when it comes down to riding the R6, I just want to take it a step further and want to be safe in doing so.

    Thanks again

Sorry Anthony. But those two phases are a contradiction. I'm with Dave Clarkson, Simon and Tinka on this one. And we'd hate to loose a member
