Doner vehicle - Log book

Hi Guy's,

I have managed to find an xj40 in a local jag breakers, he has shown me the log book and it looks okay. The previous owner has signed it over to him but he has not sent the log book to DVLA, is this normal? do i just fill in the new keeper section with my own details and send it off, I'm assuming that the breaker has not sent the DVLA a certificate of destruction as he still has the log book. once i have recieved the new log book do i then declare it as sorn or can i do it at the same time i send of the log book.

As you can most probably tell i'm a little confused about the procedure and any advice will be greatly apprieciated.

Thanks in advance.

Russ

Re: Downer vehicle - Log book

You got it right, just make sure the scrap man has not declared it as scrap other wise it is not worth the paper it is written on.

Re: Doner vehicle - Log book

Tinka,

Thanks for the rapid reply, the scrap man told me that he is going to contact DVLA to try and find out the history of the vehicle for me. He told me that he has supplied parts for many cobra builders and seems to know all about the cobra world.

From what i could see he had around 30 complete'ish cars of various ages., And was very keen to show me everyone.

Anyway thanks again.

Russ

Re: Doner vehicle - Log book

the log book is all you need.

notifying dvla of destruction is done by filling in the logbook and sending it off to them.

if you have got the log book you have no problem.same goes for insurance salvage categories ie a "B" is a break only, but thats what you are doing anyway, the fact is you need the logbook to prove age of parts only, history is neither here nor there.

Re: Doner vehicle - Log book

Sorry Russ don't know if this is completely true or not, but I was told by someone that they can scrap a car from the Vin plate as sometimes the V5 can get lost.

Re: Doner vehicle - Log book

as far as i was aware you need the logbook to hand over for 2 reasons, firstly, its to prove the age of parts used on your build and secondly, its to prove that the vehicle has been broken up.

if you have the v5 and are willing to hand it over to say its been scrapped then it will prove thats it been broken up,one way or another.

just my humble opinion, perhaps PLOD could shed some light on the legalites side??
