Transporting kit from manufacturer to workshop

Just wondering what other builders have done?

Did you arrange delivery through the manufacturer, use an independent car transport service, or hire/borrow a trailer and go and pick the kit up yourself?

Please also let me know the costs involved for whichever method you chose.

Thanks,

Simon.

I borrowed a trailer from work and pulled it with my company car so it wasn't a problem for me.

Cheapest route was best imho.

I seem to recall that hiring a car trailer is only about £25.00 per day to hire. May be your cheapest route. What does Andy charge for delivery?

I borrowed a trailer but I did insure the trailer and kit for the day; sod`s law says you`ll have a mishap if you don`t.
It cost £20 on top of the kit insurance of £70. The company is on the website.

RE: Transporting kit from manufacturer to workshop

As I was working in a single garage I picked up the chassis first and Ken stored the body for me foc until I needed it. Picked up chassis using a flat bed van, cost £75 per day hire and diesel...about £100 all in all. Once I get to rolling chassis stage put the chassis on a car trailer ( £30 per day ) and dragged it behind the company car to pick up body.

Beware - a large car trailer complete with rolling Cobra Chassis fitted with engine and box is very heavy and will certainly give the towing car a good workout.......leave plenty of braking room.

Cheers,

Tony

RE: Transporting kit from manufacturer to workshop

I guess the attached picture says it all... In front is the black AK demonstrator and our "ride" is in the back. Loaded on lower deck is my black kit (aka "Black Adder") and Roy's white one (aka "White Snake")...

The transport went from UK via France, Germany, Denmark and finally Sweden. My kit was unloaded 50 km from my garage, that part was made with a standard trailer behind my everyday Volvo 855...

I would like to take the opportunity to thank AK Sports Car once again for excellent service and support with loading and shipping our kits...

The "ride" is owned by one of Roy's friend so total sum for the transport was £300...

Ps. Both kits are left hand drive, as all original 427 Cobras! }(

RE: Transporting kit from manufacturer to workshop

It won't be too tough on the tow car as I'm fitting the engine and transmission back at the workshop.

Reminds me about 5 years ago, when I last had a car with a towbar.
I'd borrowed this 5'x4' trailer (as I was doing some major garden re-arrangement) to take the soil and rubble to the local tip.
Anyway I had the trailer full and was on the way to the tip when some boy racers in a tarted up Nova thought it would be a good idea to burn me off from the traffic lights with a crowd of people watching.
Unfortunately they lost! Ah, the joys of rear wheel drive!

I won't be doing anything like that if I decide to transport my own kit back though!

Simon

RE: Transporting kit from manufacturer to workshop

Hi Simon,

I picked up my Crendon 22nd December 2002 (what a Xmas present!!):7

I Hired a 4wheel Brian James trailer (£25 for the day) drove to Aylesbury and then back to Sussex towing behind my Golf.

Everything was perfect, no probs!!

Will do the same again when I take it to the Midlands for painting!

Regards
