Brake Servo Reconditioners?

Yo Guys,
Having managed to secure a Marina Servo from a very helpful member of our gang, I've decided to go the whole hogg & get it reconditioned before fitting to the Cob. I've got one or two ideas on whom to go to, but can anyone provide me with any recommendations/someone that they've personally used?

Cheers,
Pete.

No but I'm waiting to hear from a chappie who can supply a new ital one for about £40. I'll see if he has two!

Re: Brake Servo Reconditioners?

Wilf found this guy (quote from wilfs post a while back) Not worth reconing surely for £65?

'I happened across a chap last night at a classic car meet, he mentioned to me that he can supply Ital master cylinder set ups for around £65, AND HE HAS 50 OF THEM IN STOCK.
I have noticed on a regular basis people asking for these, so fill your boots.
The chap's name is John Blockley, he runs a business called "JCL", and his contact details are:

JCL
PO Box 5121

Re: Brake Servo Reconditioners?

Cheers for the advice guys - Steve, the chap with the Marina/Ital M/Cs only has the M/C and not the servo - phoned him a good while back. I've just phoned Past Parts & another I found on the Web - both are quoting IRO £150 quid plus VAT !! which seems rather a lot ! Past parts said that they can only recondition units that they can separate - I guess that means that I might be able to get it apart myself & check the conditiom, or if it looks like its 'hermetically sealed', it'll get a lick of paint & go straight in!

I had only intended to give it a clean up anyway - by the time I've posted it & paid VAT I'll be £200 quid down at this rate!!

What do you guys think!!

Pete.

Re: Brake Servo Reconditioners?

Personally, as long as it wasnt corroded, id give it a very thorough visual inspection, clean and repaint it.
There must be a way to check it out on the vacuum hose of another running car to make sure there were no obvious leaks? Most servos that cause trouble(and not many do) start with a leak due to corrosion (usually from spilt brake fluid taking off the paint then wet salt does the rest!)
The only other common problems are brakes sticking or hanging on slightly, usually after a servo has been reconditioned due to misalignment of the output cylinder (apparently quite common with older in line servos after a refurb).
Most common or garden servo problems are from using non vacuum pipe, which either leaks, or collapses under vac, so you dont get much vacuum at the servo and brake effect is heavier than it should be.

Re: Brake Servo Reconditioners?

Personally I fitted a complete rebuild kit to the master cylinder and just gave the servo unit a very good examination and paint. has worked perfectly for 4 years. HTH

Re: Brake Servo Reconditioners?

I'm afraid the chap I was talking about was JCL. Spoke to him today and he still has none in stock. He said it could be a week or six months till in stock again, he charges c£40.
To test my old unit I operated, pressed and wiggled it a bit as it has been sitting a long time, then sealed the large orifice with a plate and silicone... and ..don't laugh... blew up a balloon and put it over the pipe outlet. By morning it hadn't gone down!! I'm sure that proves somthing! I just thought a new one would be a good idea but I am not going to count on it, thought I'd carry on with the old one ane if a new one comes along (for c£40) buy it and put it aside.
As an aside, I would say the unit would still work even if it did leak a little.
A marina unit just sold on ebay for £77 but I have ital box.
If anyone finds a supplier please let me know too.
Ed

PS on Ebay here is a new generic servo and dual master cylinder which could probably be adapted to fit.

Re: Brake Servo Reconditioners?

Well scrub that test method, it only proves the non return valve in the plastic press in fittment works!
