Chip and Pin

I've just been to B&Q (always a pleasure to shop there!) and on paying their chip and pin machine threw a teddy at my chip and pin switch card and wouldn't read it - so I has to sign for the transaction.

So..... surely credit card theives should just nick your wallet, zap the chip on the card with a few volts and bingo - chip cannot be read by instore chip reader (so they don't need your pin number) so they proceed to forge your signature.

Is it me or is the system mad?

Re: Chip and Pin

Here in Canada they just swipe your card and hand it back to you. You then sign on the dotted line and that's it - no checking of the signature at all.

I believe Mastercard have a system where you touch your card to a sensor and can debit money up to $25 without a signature or pin...

It's not you - the PIN machine at the petrol station today didn't like my card - so I had to sign (the old system).

Re: Chip and Pin

When are they making PIN compulsory? I've found my chip and pin cards really unreliable - perhaps it's my magnetic personality

Re: Chip and Pin

Dealt with something similar recently.

A card can be cloned and the pin number can still be used to obtain cash.

strangely, the chip/pin reading device in the machine recognises the card is not quite right (though the explanation could be because it's damaged in some way..) but records a 'fall back' on the system and gives out the cash anyway.

They have had chip and pin in Australia for years, at least since 1990, what an excellent idea but work still required.

Re: Chip and Pin

The other day I was asked if I "would like" to sign or pin

I said neither but it didn’t go down well

Re: Chip and Pin

LOL Louise.

A lot of petrol stations have had the chip n pin taken off them cos of fraud. CCTV cams used by dodgy staff to record your pin!
