Can you identify the source of this quote?

"We scrapped the engine after every race - didn't even take the heads off to look inside. It was a lousy engine the 289, and basically unreliable"

Its OK. They still had to put another 289 in as they knew what the alternative was and their business was all about motor racing not invalid carriages and submesibles.

Anyway, think having to build up again is bad. Try having to scrape the barnacles off a rusty block.

No, you've got me there, never heard that, Hi-Po 289s(rated 271 hp upwards) were beefed up compared to stock 200 hp units, and the race engine(380 hp) certainly must have been. Perhaps this is why the 302 evolved..Are you holding a quiz, or don't know the answer?
Paul.

Re: Who said ...?

The answer is...

Alan Mann, manager of the 1965 'all conquering' European race team. They campaigned a mixture of Cobras, Daytona Coupes and GT40s sent to them by Shelby/Ford. Although Ford claimed a 'World Championship Win' it was actually a rather minor class where the only competition were a few privately entered Ferraris. He went on to say (of the 289):

"Badly built; we used to strip out the bottom end when they arrived from Shelby and have them rebuilt by Stuart Mathieson, but we still had to keep them down to 6500 rpm at the most"

Re: Who said ...?

ive built a couple of 289s for alan to go in his mustangs that made 390 on cast iron hedders he revs them to 7000 and we dont have to strip them and throw the bits away after every race
they usually do the season between rebuilds
