Site design - input please

Hi,

Over the past week I’ve put together a site for people to advertise their unwanted kit car spares (so I was bored, ok). Usual thing, register, login, create advert, edit advert, pictures etc. etc. As well as searching for a part, the user will also be able to view parts by “section” (perhaps “Category” would be better?), for example: Engine, Axles, Trim etc. This is where I’d like some input from you guys. I’m not really 100% sure of the best way to break down a car into sections, what I have at the moment is this:

- Engine
- Transmission
- Axles
- Braking System
- Fuel System
- Cooling System
- Miscellaneous

I don’t want too many sections yet I don’t want 50% of the adverts being put in ‘Miscellaneous’ because they can’t be put anywhere else. Am I missing any crucial sections?

There is also the option to have sub-sections so for example:

- Engine
-- Bare Blocks
-- Cylinder Heads
-- Pistons
-- Rockers

But I think this may be too specific…what do you think?

Also if anyone has any burning features in mind for this kind of site, please please please let me know.

Launch date is a couple of weeks time.

Thanks,

Jim.

How about a body section which could include brightworks etc.

I think a section for wheels & tyres might be good.
In my opinion, sub-sections would be too specific.
What about a tools section? (buy/swap etc)...

Thanks, I'll add them aswell.

Regarding sub-sections, I've already coded the site so I can use 'em if I want, however until it becomes used heavily I'll most likely hold off on 'em.

Jim.

>> electrics ie:- looms, relays, gauges lights etc

More good suggestions. I'll try and fit 'Electrics' in, only problem is I'm trying to avoid the user having to scroll the menu when using 800x600.

I should be getting some hosting space setup by the end of Tuesday so hopefully come Wednesday/Thursday I can ask the Forum members to pop over and cast a critical eye over it.

Thanks again,

Jim.

Sorry Jim, I've not looked at the site but just thought I would point out that there is a for sale section on here.

Vince,

This certainly isn't some cunning scheme to take over the clubs Forsale section, the site is designed to be for all kit car owners, many of whom don't have facilities anywher near as good as the ones Rob provides for us....its an effort to help them, reason I'm asking here is 'cos I'm a club member and know I'll get some decent input from the guys on here.

Jim.
