Re-Registering problems

I've been having a rough time with the DVLA of late.
I bought a Dax still registered as a jaguar in July, safe in the knowledge that other owners were (and still are, according to snake torque this month)getting their cars re-registered without the need for an SVA test. They've finally agreed to re-register it, but only if I can come up with a previous MOT certificate or post-build inspection by either DAX themselves, or a garage. Needless to say, the previous owner cannot provide me with either!
I have a tax disc from the last time it was on the road, but of course this just says "Jaguar" on it so it's not proof to them that the car was built when the previous owner says it was.
Anyone got any suggestions?

RE: Re-Registering problems

How about Dax themselves? they should at least be able to tell you when the major parts were supplied if you give them the chassis and body numbers.
Also if the previous keeper can tell where and when it was MOT'd you could get a copy from them, and a letter stating that it was a Cobra that they tested and not a Jaguar. It's likely to be a car that they remember.

RE: Re-Registering problems

Kev,

I've had a letter from dax that I passed on to the DVLA. It stated the build date of the chassis and body, as well as the date it was supplied to the previous owner/builder.
I've contacted the previous owner and (after five letters) managed to get a letter from him stating that he built the car, and when, but despite that the DVLA still want more "proof". I've written to him again asking for the MOT or details of where it was MOT'd so I can get a copy, but to be honest I don't hold out much hope of any help there, he seems to want to wash his hands of the car.
I seem to be bu**ered (thats not buttered)

Oh! Sh*t,
you do seem to have tried all the obvious routes. It's a pity that the previous owner/builder isn't more accomodating, unlike most of the folks in the forum. :7
Just how far away from an SVA spec, is it?
Is it just minor touches or miles away?
I know the cost of the test isn't cheap but it may be your only route forward it seems. ;(

Best of luck.

Kev,

Its miles away. It's beautifully built and a cracking car, but so far away from SVA spec (I wouldn't know where to start) it'd cost a fortune to bring up to spec.;(

RE: Re-Registering problems

Hi there when did you purchase the car ? because if it was fairly recent then the previous owner should have known about SVA/re-registering.So you could go to trading standards and see if they can sort it out.

RE: Re-Registering problems

Oh I knew all about it when I bought it. I had no promises nor expected any.
But as so many people had their cars re-registered, I had no way of knowing the scheme was "finished".
Did you get a letter from the DVLA?
Did you see any notices in the mags that the scheme was over?
Didn't think so.

Hi there you say the DVLA will accept a post build test by Dax then why not get Dax to test it then you should be able to get sorted
cheers

RE: Re-Registering problems

Paul,

If only it were that easy. When I say post build, they want something dated 1991 (when the car was built) to prove that it was finished and on the road. Having it done now would prove nothing, dax can say when the chassis was supplied (198 but not when it was finished.
