RE: Which Alarm

Thatcham approved Cat 1 alarm system is best (from an insurers point of view) as it can reduce your premium, although remember that as a Cobra is an open top car you will need to protect the interior space with a microwave sensor module rather than an ultrasonic system (which is sensitive to air movement and will false alarm).

RE: Which Alarm

If you fit the alarm yourself then you won't be able to get the reduced insurance (Even though you'll probably do a better job than the halfwits at the shop) - Alarms need to be fitted by certified money pinchers - err, I mean installers.

I bought a Cobra alarm for my cobra along with aditional microwave and level reference sensors - £250 in all.

RE: Which Alarm

Steve, my personnel advise re complicated/expensive alarm systems fitted to new cars and others, is a total waste of time. They go off when not required (no body takes a blind bit of notice!), & malfunction at incovinient moments causing non starting & battery drainage problems and many more.

Some will disagree, but my advice is to fit hidden isolating swithches for fuel pump & coil, battery cut of swith and of course steering lock if you have one. Much less fitting and expence & head ache problems, Eric.

RE: Which Alarm

I biult a car a few years ago and I gave Auto Watch a ring, told them what I was doing.I wanted to see the project from start to finish and I was not keen on somebody else fitting the alarm (sucked upto them basically). They agreeded to sell me an alarm complete with ultrasonic sensor, secret switch (10mm x 10mm,4mm) and postage for approx £85. Fitted at shop £400-500. Switch had to be pressed within 15secs after ignition turn on or it went into full alarm and immobolised car (anti-hijack).
Try them, they can only say no. I'll be trying them.

Stuart.

RE: Which Alarm

I have been reliably informed that it is possible to install an alarm yourself and then get it 'approved' and certificated by a professional installer.

Just ensure you install it as per the instructions, and keep all the wiring neat and tidy.

Basically they'll charge you to check out your installation. Just phone around, a friend had his done this way and they charged him about £40 and took about 30mins.

RE: Which Alarm

Hi

53% of stolen cars these days are stolen with the keys or sophisticated theft equipment that disables alarms.

I would recommend fitting 'Tracker' or another one of the car tracking systems. That way if it does go walkabout you are quite likely to get it back. These cost about the same as a top of the range alarm.

Andy
