First registration and MOT

I know there's been discussion in the past if where an age related reg has still needed an MOT - mainly due (I think) to lack of understanding of the rules by Post Office operatives.
Anyway, my cob was first registered last May, so my tax is up at the end of this month. I decided to try the telephone renewal method and, according to the pre recorded message, my application is successful. The "system" checked I have valid insurance (and as far as I'm aware, I'm not sure as there was no human contact) and my registration date so I don't need an MOT. I should get my tax disc in 5 days.....

Re: First registration and MOT

There is another way to look at this - a 3rd party checking major safety-related components once a year is no bad thing on cars with the performance we have.

My MOT this year found some worn shocker bushes that I had not spotted in my pre-season checks.

I view it as £40 well spent.

Well, I'll be.....my tax disc arrived this morning. This was a completely hassel-free way of retaxing.

Taking up Wilfs point, you could have your car MOT'd - whether its need or not for obtaining road tax.

Re: First registration and MOT

I recommend a yearly MOT to my customers whether or not the law says they need one.

Re: First registration and MOT

I had an MOT pre-SVA and it was completely useless, apart from the drive down which allowed me to calibrate my speedo and partially bed the brakes in. The actual test told me next to nothing, so if you go for an MOT make sure you get a good recommendation. Don't use JustMOTs in Uckfield...

Reverend Flask.....err Robin.

I think the idea is to get an independent professional to give the car the once over for piece of mind. As most of us need an MOT then so be it.

As others have said, 'You can miss things.' I missed a bent handbrake adjuster on my Jag back end. Only picked up on the hand brake test. When my car is running I normally take it to my friendly MOT station after layup and get him to brake test it for a drink. The 4pot xj calipers do get lazzy when left for a while. Done this ever since I had to brake hard in an emergency on a first run after being of the road and found myself the wrong way round in front of a truck.

I quite agree, but my MOT tester didn't really know what to do with an unregistered kit car so was of limited use... got the certificate but didn't get peace of mind
