Fun with Power Tools!

Hey chaps,

B&Q have a 20% discount on all tools & I am considering buying a dremmel rotary burr for the cob build. Can anyone who owns one of these advise if there any good? I am looking for something that will be able to cope with with a multidude of jobs, including grinding & polishing engine block ports etc & engine componenets, alternatively do I go for something with a bit more grunt like a bosch die grinder?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Martyn

Dremel is great, would not be without it, but you need more grunt for what you want to do.

Re: Fun with Power Tools!

Hi Martyn, I needed to cut the clutch fork as it was catching on the side of the transmission tunnel when depressed. I have had a dremmel for years which works from a transformer so I got a couple of rotary saw attachments to try and do the job. Unfortunately the chuck packed in because I over tightened it and I was left with no option to replace it. Not wanting to spend a fortune and as I had most of the attachments I opted for the 240 volt Dremmel (About £40) which comes with about 8 basic accessories. This machine is impressive! It has 2 speeds and certainly packs a punch. Where the 12v machine used to snag and stop under load the 240v just keeps on going. Physically slightly larger than the lower voltage but hardly significant. (I would make sure you go for the large chuck version as some attachments will not fit the smaller chucks)
Cheers, Clive.

Re: Fun with Power Tools!

Its one of those tools that has its place. I'm not sure there is anything that I have used it for that I couldn't have done some other way, reasonably easily, but it has certainly made some jobs more straightforward. Cutting and enlarging holes in fibreglass is a good example.

If I was trying to start up a collection of tools it certainly isn't at the top of the list, but it is certainly one of those tools that is nice to have. not sure that is any clearer, but it might help!!

Re: Fun with Power Tools!

If you have a compressor then buy an air die grinder, if not then see above.

Re: Fun with Power Tools!

Ive had two dremels, wore em both out, then bought B&s own copy on a stand with a load of spare bits £29 just as good as the dremel but both only suitable for light detail work.

I bought the Machinemart tool, comes with a useful flexible attachment. Wish I'd bought it earlier...
