Non servo brakes

Thinking of going non servo on my SR.
Anyone know the best master cylinder size or from which car to fit to ensure adequate braking?
Would it be best with the Jaguar one as all the calipers are Jag?
Must be quite a few guys running without a servo.
I am trying to mount floor mounted pedals from a TVR and with all other problems in and around the area it would be easier without the servo methinks.
John.

Re: Non servo brakes

Hi Maverick,

Could you have a remote servo, similar to the setup I've seen for a servo assisted clutch ?

Re: Non servo brakes

GD don't use servos do they? Or am I mistaken? What do they use?

Crendons now are servo-less, John uses his own design balance bar set up though. I'm not sure what master cylinder he uses either, sorry.

I actually prefer the non-servo brakes on the Crendon to the servoed ones on my Dax. The Dax brakes are very good, but a bit sharp on sudden braking, causing easy wheel lock up on the front. Without a servo you have to push that much harder, so the inital stab from 'panic' braking isn't quite so sharp.

Hi John,

Still battling along then, thats the spirit. I still have a new servo for the SRV8 bought when I was doing mine but never used. Its a ford unit angled up by about 10Deg. It was correct for my version of SR. I also have a girling 5/8 clutch master cylinder again new. Both Items are old but have been stored out of the light in a cool dry place. Yours for the postage + a fiver, I would say they would be OK, still have the seal caps in place. Bought about 93-94. Bargain!

Did you source a body or will you be doing a Lawrence or Arabia?

Re: Non servo brakes

Thanks guys,
I thought GD used non servo but dont know the master cylinder.
Hopefully someone will let me know.
Hi Paul - I'm still struggling away. I bought an old Dax body the one that had it's front drivers wheel arch removed in an accident. It was in the club mag in 95 and then later showing the repair.
Because SR disappeared for some time before Madgewick took up the project I've had to struggle along tracing parts etc.
Really getting there now after lots of mods to make things work/fit.
Bought this TVR floor mounted pedal box assemblyo from a tuscan and am looking to mount the cylinders under the exhausti manifolds I made up. Hence the need to go non servo. Cant go above as the intermeddiate cam bar on the assembly causes the pedals to be placed too far toward the driver. I want to keep some form of adjustment for leg length.
Problems, problems and more!
John.

Re: Non servo brakes

Hi John,
I'm currently converting my single circuit servo set up to dual non-servo.
I'm also installing a new pedal box.
(The job started as changing the starter motor but that's another story).
My brakes are ex Sierra and I'm ditching the existing single pot calipers and fitting Wilwood 4 pot units.
I'm hoping that Rally Design will be at Stoneliegh to help with master cylinder sizes and other queries, so far they haven't been too helpfull on the phone.
I have managed to glean the info that the bigger the master cylinder bore the more braking effort is required. It seems to come down to how you prefer the "feel" of the pedal.

Was this a silly question ? I'm still a newby round here.

Can you have a remote servo for the braking system or is this not feasible.

Thanks

Ryan

Re: Non servo brakes

The very, very old GDs used a servo but haven't done for at least seven years.
Hope that helps. As an aside I think the direct feel is nice and when I drive a servo'd car is scares the hell out of me!

Re: Non servo brakes

Having no servo also means your leg muscles develop at the same rate. Bloody heavy competition clutch on the left leg and servo brake on the right means you'll end up looking like you drive an Automatic.

(Only in reverse!)
