Hitachi psl100 starter motor on Chevy sb

For my 383 Chevy, I bought a 'high performance Hitachi PSL100' starter motor.

The teeth on the pinion are 11mm long, the teeth on the flywheel are 11mm long, but if I manually pull the pinion out as far as I can, it only overlaps or meshes with the flywheel by 5.5mm. Is this likely to be a problem?

Oh and does anyone know a way of locking the pinion out when checking the clearance?

Cheers

hi if you're able to, remove the solenoid and you'll find that you can then move the arm/lever quite easily . this will remove the 'tension' holding the gear 'out of mesh'
i hope this helps

Think you will find that the 5.5 will be ok.I have the same on my chevy .You can,t have it in all the way because it has to get back out of the way when it fires up.
