To drive or not to drive

Hi All

Planning on picking up my Cob which is being finished off and SVA'd by AK next week.

They seem to be a bit hesitant about me driving the car back to York from Peterborough as a maiden journey.

So what are the general experiences have you had? What falls off? and what's the best advice.

I have waited over three years to finally drive the car and not driven another. AK have had the car a month, the suspense is killing me. I have read every one elses first drives and I really don't want to wait any longer.

So, come on, what goes wrong?

Warren

Hi Warren, talking out of my *rse perhaps as I haven't driven one either, but possibly they're concerned about 'grey porridge' who pull out in front(in a Micra or similar) when your ambling down main road and that can be deceptively quick with a big torqey V8.. My maiden voyage in my TVR was from the wilds of Gloucester to E.London, in at the deep end, never having driven anything similar, when DB calls to say my Dax is ready, I'll have it delivered!
Those AKs are nice, enjoy!

Re: To drive or not to drive

If the weathers good, drive it for gods sake, but sensibly. The worry will be about bits falling off etc, but if you are in the AA or similar so what.

Re: To drive or not to drive

Yeah, drive it.

Peterborough to York is basically straight up the A1, one long, relatively straight road. Take it nice and easy, plenty of places along the way to stop and check things over, have a break etc.

Only concern might be the weather !

Re: To drive or not to drive

Hi,

Ive only had my Cobra for 2 and a half weeks and I was the same as you - wanting to drive it right away. In the end I got it delivered and 1st two drives were literally round the block!

You will have to drive it so carefully the 1st time you are out and I think you may be too nervous to fully enjoy driving it on a long maiden journey.

If it is wet - forget it! With fat tyres, 400+ bhp and no ABS - it ain't fun in the wet.

My sentiments exactly..not doubting his abilities as a driver, but these are not your average car.

Re: To drive or not to drive

The camp seems to be split so far, but at the minute, "Yeah, drive it", gets my vote..

Re: To drive or not to drive

I'm very nervous about customers taking their car for 200 mile plus drives home but amazingly almost all have completed the trip without problems. These cars can have teething troubles and there is a chance you could break down but based on my experience you willl have around a 95% chance of getting home trouble free.
This is not a DB or AK thing but more likely to be down to one of the many mass produced components that lets you down if you do have a problem.

..Still makes me nervous though........

Trust the Yanks to 'go large' on the subject, posted today on ClubCobra:

Seems like the other Yanks are quite up for him doing it!
I say go for it too, but have your AA membership card taped to the dashboard!

If he's going 1500miles, might as well take a camcorder and make a road movie?
