Small Block Chevy's don't bounce !!!

As discovered today when the guy doing my customs clearance called to ask me come to Manchester airport to take a look at the "damage" to my engine.

It alledgedly feel from a forklift (don't know how far it fell) and hit the ground upside down. The thick wooden crate broke into pieces and the bits that took the impact were the lifting bracket attached to the inlet manifold, the dizy cap is smashed to bits and one of the valve covers has been slightly squashed towards the rear. All the rest seems fine.

The guy that is handling my customs clearance reckons he can claim the repair bill from the freight company/airport handlers.

I was having a good day until then Calmed down a lot now

I'll

Re: Small Block Chevy's don't bounce !!!

If I was you I would reject the engine and get a new one from the insurance company.

I would be willing to bet that there has been some unseen shock damage on the internal components and once you accept the engine you will have no chance of getting more compensation should other problems associated with the accident make themselves known.

Is it worth the risk ?

Cheers,

Tony

Re: Small Block Chevy's don't bounce !!!

I agree with Tony, once you start looking the damage could soon mount up, what about the other end of the dizzy, inside the engine has that received any damage?
has the cab been disturbed ,bending the fixing bolts/linkages?
have any of the gaskets been jarred breaking their seals? etc etc.

I know its a big pain in the backside and you have waited so long for the engine, but let them have it back, its the safest thing to do, Failing that get the insurance to pay for someone like BAE to rebuild it for you.

Bad luck mate, keep smiling

Re: Small Block Chevy's don't bounce !!!

The walk wasn't that long.

I think I'll get it out of customs and get a chevy builder to take a look at it. Don't want to take risks. Thanks for your comments Rich/Tony. Needless to say I'm pretty p*ssed off.

Who's the best company in the UK to do this sort of thing? Company's I know of that build engines are BAE, Repower, Realsteel, EDA. Would they take this sort of thing on?

Hi,
Take another walk, longer this time and have a good think.

If anyone opens that engine up to check it, firstly your guarantee will be voided and secondly you may have a job to prove that any damage done was actually caused by the fall. You'll be giving the insurance company a way out.
Who is going to pay the bill to have the engine stripped, checked, and rebuilt. ?

It may be best to write this one off and claim from the insurance.

Regards
Jim

Kev

Agreed, you have no knowledge of the height that the engine dropped from, ir if it bounced etc.

I would refuse the engine if I were you, and claim the full cost from the insurance company.

These are precision engineering builds, if it is out and you start it up, there is the potential for a whole heap of trouble.

If you take it to EDA, then as Jim points out, then your warranty with the original builder is void.

I would err on the side of caution with this one.

My Son had a toy steering wheel which he used to spin furiously, making loads of go-faster noises, leaning into all the tight corners, perhaps running the government feels a bit like that. You make all the noises, but when you stop you haven't really gone anywhere.

Re: Small Block Chevy's don't bounce !!!

Kev,

Is it one of our engines?

If so, don't sign anything to accept delivery. We will ship you a replacement and we will sort out the return of the engine and the insurance. Any damage may appear superficial, but a crack in the block may have occurred.
