My engine for sale

I would really appreciate some of you taking a quick peek at my engine advert and telling me if I have priced this right. Too high or too low, I promise not to be offended.

It's in the classified section.

Cheers
Warren

Re: My engine for sale

My obvious question would be "why are you selling it"

IMHO, yes it's way to highly priced.

Re: My engine for sale

Ive just read the full ad which is very comprehensive and explains everything, including why hes flogging it, the full spec, machining work, even who did it etc.
Price for that spec, well Id say its a snip, and if I was in the market for a Chevvy Id be on the phone to him.
Good luck with the sale.

Re: My engine for sale

Hi Warren,

With stuff like this you never seem to get back what you put in unfortunately.

If I was in the market for a 300bhp-ish SBC turnkey I'd expect to pay around the £4k mark from the UK engine builders, would that be sensible?

What may effect the resale value of your motor is that fact it wasn't built by a professional builder (not to say you haven't done a good job of course) and it's used. It not been used a lot but it's still used.

Also Mike's point is a good one, why are you selling it? The answer to that is crucial for someone looking to buy a used engine. I nearly bought one last year and the answer was "I want more power". I want plenty of power myself so I avoided it.

All this said I hope you manage to recoup as much of your investment as possible. I personally hate losing money.

What should it be then Mike?

Reason for selling is quite simple as I said in the advert, it's not fast enough for me. Make no mistake, for the price I am looking for you certainly couldn't build it. I know to my cost what this engine took to put together.

I took views when I decided to go down this route and at the time opinion seemed to be that a nice 350bhp motor would be enough, it's not for me. It could be that the unit will really wake up when it has been tuned properly, the carb hasn't been set up and it does look rich on the left bank so I know there is more to come. The big mistake I made was not taking a test drive or going for a ride in one before my own.

As you will probably have seen in other threads, the gearbox went last week. Buying the kit in the UK is costly but if I get a fair price for the engine I am going to stump up for an Engine + Gearbox that I have seen at a reasonable price.

It really is an honest offer,

A cut out will cost circa £425, I paid £500
The bill for all the initial engine parts was in the region of £1800, I have been looking for the original receipt as I seem to remember this being in excess of £2300 but I do not want to exaggerate costs
Added later were I Beams and all the dress up stuff circa £500
Engineering costs circa £600
Adaptor plate was £120-150 from memory
Clutch was £180 ish, could have been more
I paid £350 for the Getrag and £175 for the ropey bellhousing
Added later still was an uprated HEI, £160
Jegs throttle return thing from one of the guys on the site was £25 if I remember rightly. I bought the 8mm spark leads later, I think they were £50 or £60

And this doesn't even scratch the running around to do all this. The engine has only just covered 500 miles. If you are really saying that its not worth even 3K then I will keep it.

At the moment as I said in the post to get over 400bhp is going to take serious money and on top of that I need the new gearbox. A bulk buy from the States is starting to look attractive if I can get a reasonable offer on the existing engine that for all intents and purposes is virtually new.

All input is welcome and I won't be offended.

Cheers
Warren

Re: My engine for sale

Hi Kev

How are you getting on with yours by the way?

When the engine was reassembled I had the engine builder do the short engine, i.e. the critical stuff, crank, rods, pistons, cam, etc.

I was left to put the cylinder heads, inlet manifold, sump, etc onto the car.

I am not sure you could buy this for £4K in the UK, I think you would be closer to £5K with all the chrome, carb, clutch, etc, then if you are going Getrag you need the adpator plate, etc

I think you could get one stateside certainly, I'm really not trying to fool anyone with this and if I hadn't had the recent problems then I would have run it for a year at least before having to revisit the piggy bank.

If it doesn't sell then I will might follow Roberts down the EDA route, stroker with a dry sump aiming for 450BHP.

Cheers
Warren

Re: My engine for sale

One thing your engine will be missing that a pro built one does have is a warranty. For me getting an engine built by someone that garanteed their work was vital. I think most people who buy engines in a turn-key state do it because they don't have the knowledge to build or repair their own and are prepared to pay the extra for piece of mind. I got mine from a pro builder with full garantee. I'm sure your engine is built perfectly, but to pay 3k for something that could go bang in its first turn with no warrantee is a risk that drops the value. If you garantee your engine for a period of time or mileage you're entering an area that I doubt you'd want to get into as a privateer.

Good luck

OK thanks, My new one should be complete within 3 or so weeks. Insurance are taking the p*ss as usual but the engine builder is dealing with it.

You're probably right actually with all the bells and whistles.

If someone wants a motor of that spec it's probably a good deal.
